The Huntingdon County Arts Council is hosting the 10th annual Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering at the name sake state park in central Pennsylvania. Musicians and those appreciative of folk music know the Folk Gathering to be a fun and friendly weekend of playing and listening to folk music - a fantastic three days of workshops, concerts, jams, dancing and friendship. The event highlights traditional Pennsylvania music and culminates in the annual honoring of a Heritage Musician. The State Park is located about 30 miles from State College and 90 miles from Harrisburg. This is a gorgeous location with beautiful mountain views, many miles of hiking trails, and a six acre lake for swimming and fishing.
Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are also options for singers, dancers, and non-musicians. Choose from more than 40 workshops on topics ranging from old-time tunes to hymn singing to playing backup to how to learn by ear. Jam sessions will take place throughout the weekend.
For those who are new to music, a variety of instruments will be available for you to try, and we'll have gentle and patient teachers to get you started. There will be a staff concert each evening in the church on state park grounds, followed by staff-led jams, and a contra/square dance with open band in the blacksmith shop. Attendees are encouraged to consider camping on site and to register early, especially to reserve catered meal service. Last minute attendees are welcome and registration will stay open until the event. For more information, check out the website, www.folkgatheing.com .
This year’s staff includes musical trio Simple Gifts, Richard Sleigh on harrmonica, Ryan Thomson, .a.k.a. Captain Fiddle, Kelly Parker on African drums, Patty Lambert of the Irish band Callanish, music historian Jerry Zolten, contra dance caller and instructor Bob Nicholson, the Allegheny Bilge Rats, and all-around music instructors Henry Koretzky, Jerry Trusty, Holly Foy, Diana Wagner, Ryck Kaiser, Peggy Shutes, Peggy Leiby, and Bob Hummer.
Additional information and registration forms are available online at www.folkgathering.com . The event is hosted by the Huntingdon County Arts Council and supported in part by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour.
