Join Park Ranger Doug Bosley on a 3-3.5 mile hike of the Summit Level to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. The hike is free, but reservations are REQUIRED. Wear good hiking shoes/boots, bring water, be mindful that weather conditions within the hike area are unpredictable. The hike will go rain, snow, and/or shine, so prepare for snow, ice, mud, rain, roots, rocks, puddles, and other potential hazards. Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located 10 miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off the Gallitzin exit of U.S. Highway 22. The park preserves portions of the first railroad crossing of the Allegheny Mountains. This unique railroad connected the eastern and western divisions of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal.
