Here is the recap of the February 2 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).
Again, we knew we were up against a major event in the sporting world this week. Since the game was pretty much over by 20 seconds into the third quarter, we thank everybody who tuned into the “Homegrown Rocker” this week to check out our annual “Ladies of Local Music” Special, as we spotlighted the women who create and perform music on area and regional stages! Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 2002 song by Clove from the archive for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Nina Scarcia’s Wash Away CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

A special benefit fundraiser has been organized for late March to help out the brother of an area musician who is battling cancer. Ryan Carruthers, the brother of The Hope Fallacy drummer Trey Carruthers, is currently hospitalized and battling a rare form of cancer called M.D.S. The benefit fundraiser will take place on Saturday, March 29 at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society, from 7 to 11 p.m. Donation will be $10, which includes entertainment by The Hope Fallacy, food and refreshments. Proceeds will help with Ryan’s medical payments.
State College blues performers Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats have issued their second full-length CD. The album is called You’re All I Got, and it features eight new original songs and two remakes. We will debut a track from that album on next Sunday night’s “Sunday Bluesday” special edition of the “Homegrown Rocker.”
Female-fronted hard progressive rockers Lies, Inc. have a new guitar player, as former Rain Must Fall guitarist Jarrett Bickel takes over for Nate Nagle, who is departing the group due to school-related reasons. Jarrett’s first official appearance with Lies, Inc. will be on March 1 at Mr. Small’s in Pittsburgh during the Female Voices of Metal concert.
