CLOSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS?

THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS PUBLIC HEARINGS TODAY AT THE JUNIOR HIGH TO DISCUSS PLANS TO CLOSE WRIGHT AND WASHINGTON-JEFFERSON ELEMENTARIES AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. THE FIRST STARTS AT 5:30. DISTRICT OFFICIALS SAY THEY CAN SAVE MORE THAN 1-MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. UP TO 10 TEACHERS FROM ANY OF THE DISTRICT’S SCHOOL COULD LOSE THEIR JOBS AND ABOUT 8 SECRETARIAL, CUSTODIAL, AND OTHER POSITIONS COULD BE CUT. THE BOARD MUST WAIT 90 DAYS BEFORE VOTING ON THE CLOSURES.

SELLING VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME?

FINAL BIDS ARE DUE TODAY FROM HEALTH CARE COMPANIES INTERESTED IN BUYING VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME. BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SAID LAST WEEK THAT THE A-Y-S-O SOCCEER FIELDS NEXT TO THE FACILITY MAY BE EXCLUDED FROM THE SALE. OFFICIALS AGREED TO RE-DEFINE THE PROPERTY BOUNDARIES AS A WAY TO KEEP THE POTENTIAL SALE MOVING FORWARD.

BODY BELIEVED TO BE THAT OF MISSING MAN

A BADLY DECOMPOSED BODY WAS FOUND TANGLED UP IN SOME TREES NEAR THE YOUGHIGHENY RIVER AT OHIOPYLE STATE PARK IN FAYETTE COUNTY SATURDAY NIGHT. FOLLOWING AN AUTOPSY, OFFICIALS BELIEVE IT’S THE BODY OF 29 YEAR OLD JEREMY WALKER OF SOMERSET WHO WAS LAST HEARD FROM ON NEW YEAR’S DAY. SEARCH TEAMS SCOURED THE PARK FOR DAYS FOLLOWING HIS DISAPPEARANCE.

STUDENTS ESCAPE INJURY

LUCKILY NO INJURIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A BUS CARRYING PENN STATE STUDENTS CAUGHT FIRE ALONG INTERSTATE 70 JUST OUTSIDE OF BREEZEWOOD, BEDFORD COUNTY. OFFICIALS SAY 3 BUSES WERE BRINGING STUDENTS BACK FROM SPRING BREAK WHEN ONE OF THEM STARTED SMOKING. EVERYONE GOT OFF SAFELY, THEN WATCHED THE VEHICLE GO UP IN FLAMES. THE STUDENTS EVENTUALLY MADE IT BACK TO CAMPUS AND WILL RESUME CLASSES TODAY.

DRUG TRIAL TO BEGIN

JURY SELECTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY FOR THE BLAIR COUNTY TRIAL OF KENNETH PINER OF ALTOONA. LAST WEEK, THE JUDGE AGREED TO ALLOW PINER TO WITHDRAW HIS GUILTY PLEA TO A NUMBER OF DRUG CHARGES. PINER ADMITTED HE STOLE SMALL AMOUNTS OF COCAINE AND CRACK…BUT SAYS HE WAS NOT PART OF THE MAJOR DRUG RING OPERATING OUT OF THE CORNER BAR AND GRILL. PINER WAS ORIGINALLY SENTENCED TO 19 TO 38 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON.

CRIME MEETING TONIGHT

THE FIRST BLAIR COUNTY-WIDE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MEETING OF THE YEAR WILL BE HELD TONIGHT AT 6 AT THE PENN STATE ALTOONA DOWNTOWN DEVORRIS CENTER. IT WAS POSTPONED EARLIER THIS MONTH DUE TO BAD WEATHER. GUEST SPEAKERS WILL BE SHERIFF MITCH COOPER AND SERGEANT ROB ARCHEY WHO WILL TALK ABOUT ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE.

FALLING GAS PRICES

GAS PRICES ARE FALLING AROUND THE COUNTRY. THE LATEST LUNDBERG SURVEY SHOWS A DROP OF JUST OVER 5-CENTS PER GALLON OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS. THE AVERAGE FOR SELF-SERVE REGULAR IS NOW JUST OVER $3.73. MOST ALTOONA-AREA GAS STATIONS ARE STILL AT $3.81 OR $3.85.
