POST OFFICE CUTTING LOCAL JOBS

THE U-S POSTAL SERVICE HAS DECIDED TO MOVE SOME SERVICES FROM THE DUNCANSVILLE SORTING FACILITY TO JOHNSTOWN AND ABOUT 30 PEOPLE COULD LOSE THEIR JOBS BY MAY 15TH. STARTING THEN, DUNCANSVILLE WON’T BE A HUB FOR MAIL COMING INTO AND OUT OF THE AREA. ALL THE MAIL WILL GO THROUGH JOHNSTOWN. THE DUNCANSVILLE PLANT WILL ONLY TAKE MAIL FROM JOHNSTOWN AND GET IT READY FOR INDIVIDUAL MAIL CARRIERS. A MEETING FOR THE UNION POSTAL EMPLOYEES IS SCHEDULED MARCH 22ND. THE POSTAL SERVICE IS ALSO ENDING MAIL PROCESSING AT 9 OTHER FACILITIES IN PENNSYLVANIA.

TEEN CHARGED AS ADULT

AN 11TH GRADER AT ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL IS NOW CHARGED AS AN ADULT WITH ROBBING 2 MEN, FIRING HIS GUN, AND PISTOL-WHIPPING ONE VICTIM IN A 6TH AVENUE GARAGE WEDNESDAY NIGHT. POLICE FOUND THE STOLEN ITEMS, THE HANDGUN, AND THE SPENT SHELLS WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THE HOME OF 17 YEAR OLD MARQUIS MATHIS. HE IS ALSO SUSPECTED OF A SIMILAR HOLD-UP ON FEBRUARY 16TH. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR WEDNESDAY. MEANWHILE, MATHIS IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON.

TEEN TOSSES GUN DURING CHASE

ALTOONA POLICE CAUGHT A 17 YEAR OLD FOLLOWING A FOOT CHASE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. AT ONE POINT, HE DITCHED A LOADED GUN THAT TURNED OUT TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN IN A RECENT BURGLARY. POLICE BELIEVE THE SAME GUN WAS USED TO SHOOT OUT A GLASS SLIDING DOOR IN JANUARY FRIGHTENING A FAMILY INSIDE THEIR 2ND AVENUE HOME. THE TEEN…WHO IS LIKELY TO BE CHARGED AS AN ADULT…IS ALSO ONE OF THE SUSPECTS IN THE RECENT VANDALISM THAT FORCED CITY OFFICIALS TO CLOSE DOWN THE 13TH STREET PEDESTRIAN CROSSOVER.

POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTING

LEROY KANAGY OF LEWISTOWN IS FACING CHARGES FOLLOWING A SHOOTING AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT LAST NIGHT. MIFFLIN COUNTY AUTHORITIES ISSUED A WARRANT AFTER LEARNING THAT KANAGY HAD MADE THREATS AGAINST HIS WIFE WHO LIVES IN OHIO. KANAGY REFUSED TO STOP FOR AN OFFICER AND EVENTUALLY CRASHED INTO A POLICE CRUISER. HE WAS TASED, BUT FLED ON FOOT UNTIL HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. DURING THE STRUGGLE SHOTS WERE FIRED...AT LEAST ONE OF THEM BY A LEWISTOWN POLICE OFFICER. KANAGY WAS FLOWN TO GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER IN DANVILLE FOR FOOT INJURIES.

GETTING READY IN HAPPY VALLEY

WITH STATE PATTY’S DAY TOMORROW, THE CENTRE COUNTY TASK FORCE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE STATE COLLEGE POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL HAVE NUMEROUS OFFICERS ON PATROL BEGINNING TODAY. OVER THE WEEKEND, OFFICERS WILL TAKE A ZERO-TOLERANCE APPROACH. QUITE A FEW DOWNTOWN BARS HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL REMAIN CLOSED AND THE LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD IS SHUTTING DOWN 4 LIQUOR STORES AT 6PM, 3 HOURS EARLY. THE BORO ALSO PLANS TO DOUBLE ITS USUAL STREET-PARKING ENFORCEMENT DETAILS AND THE COST OF  PARKING IS JUMPING FOR THE DAY. RATES IN BORO-OWNED GARAGES WILL BE 75-CENTS PER HOUR FOR THE FIRST 3 HOURS AND THEN HIKE TO ONE-DOLLAR-75-CENTS AN HOUR AFTER THAT.

THE HARRISBURG PATRIOT NEWS IS REPORTING THAT FEDERAL AUTHORITIES ARE CONDUCTING SEPARATE INVESTIGATIONS INVOLVING JERRY SANDUSKY, THE SECOND MILE, AND PENN STATE…PARALLEL TO THE CASE THAT IS ALREADY BEING PROSECUTED BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE. PENN STATE CONFIRMED TO THE PAPER YESTERDAY THAT THE UNIVERSITY RECEIVED A SUBPOENA EARLIER THIS MONTH REQUESTING INFORMATION. SPOKESWOMAN LISA POWERS SAYS THE UNIVERSITY IS FULLY COOPERATING WITH THE U-S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE.

ALTOONA NARCOTICS OFFICERS MADE 1 CONTROLLED BUY OF MORPHINE PILLS AND 3 BUYS OF HIGH-GRADE MARIJUANA FROM PATRICK OSWALT RECENTLY AND YESTERDAY THEY ARRESTED OSWALT AND JOYCE COX AT THEIR HOME AT 23-02 WEST CHESTNUT AVENUE. POLICE HAD RECEIVED NUMEROUS TIPS ABOUT THE COUPLE TRAVELING OUT OF TOWN TO BUY POUNDS OF MARIJUANA TO SELL IN THE ALTOONA AREA. COPS SEIZED 2-AND-A-QUARTER POUNDS OF MARIJUANA…6 GRAMS OF HASHISH…OVER 12-HUNDRED DOLLARS IN CASH, AND VARIOUS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. OSWALT’S BAIL IS SET AT 125-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH AND COX’ IS 15-THOUSAND. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED WEDNESDAY.

FOLLOWING A 3-MONTH INVESTIGATION BY THE CAMBRIA COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE AND THE F-B-I, DISTRICT ATTORNEY KELLY CALLIHAN SAYS POLICE HAVE ARRESTED 21 YEAR OLD CHANTEL DUES OF WINDBER AND 25 YEAR OLD WILLIAM BEAN OF JOHNSTOWN FOR THEIR ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN A HEROIN OPERATION. AUTHORITIES ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE ALLEGED RINGLEADER, 26 YEAR OLD EVAN SANTUCCI. A SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED THIS WEEK UNCOVERED 280 BAGGIES OF HEROIN WITH A STREET VALUE OF 9-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

THE CENTRE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE SAYS STATE POLICE RAIDED 3 DOWNTOWN STATE COLLEGE STORES WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND SEIZED BATH SALTS AND SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA THAT WERE RECENTLY BANNED IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE OFFICERS ALSO CONFISCATED NARCOTIC PARAPHERNALIA AT JAMAICA JUNCTION, DRAGON CHASERS EMPORIUM, AND GRASSHOPPERS. BOTH THE STORE OWNERS AND CLERKS CAN BE CHARGED WITH FELONIES FOR SELLING THE SUBSTANCES.
