BLAME PLACED AT PENN STATE

PENN STATE IS REELING AFTER FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH’S REPORT SAID FORMER PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ, FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY, AND FORMER FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO DISREGARDED JERRY SANDUSKY’S VICTIMS, IN HOPES OF AVOIDING BAD PUBLICITY. FREEH DETERMINED THAT THE 4 MEN REPEATEDLY CONCEALED FACTS FROM THE AUTHORITIES, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THE PENN STATE COMMUNITY, AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE…ALLOWING SANDUSKY TO CONTINUE ABUSING KIDS FOR OVER A DECADE. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS ACCEPTING THE BLAME. CHAIRWOMAN KAREN PEETZ SAYS MEMBERS FAILED IN THEIR OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE PROPER OVERSIGHT OF THE BOARD’S OPERATIONS. THE FREEH REPORT COST 6-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS. IT INCLUDES 119 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY TO REPAIR ALL THE FAILURES.
THE FREEH REPORT SUGGESTS PENN STATE VIOLATED THE CLERY ACT IN A SEVERE WAY…AND NOW THE U-S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING AND THE UNIVERSITY COULD LOSE ALL OF ITS FEDERAL EDUCATION MONEY, POTENTIALLY TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. THE REPORT SAYS THE INFAMOUS 2001 JERRY SANDUSKY SHOWER INCIDENT REPORTED BY MIKE MCQUEARY SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUBLICLY REPORTED IN A TIMELY MANNER TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY.

JOE PATERNO’S SON, JAY, IS DISPUTING THE FREEH REPORT’S CONCLUSION THAT HIS DAD WAS PART OF THE SANDUSKY COVER-UP AT PENN STATE. JAY CLAIMS HIS FATHER DID NOT INTERFERE WITH THE INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SANDUSKY AND HE DID NOT SUSPECT THAT SANDUSKY WAS A CHILD PREDATOR.

SPANIER’S ATTORNEYS CLAIM HE WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY SUSPECTED CRIMINAL ACTIVITY INVOLVING SANDUSKY UNTIL HIS ARREST LAST NOVEMBER.

AN ATTORNEY FOR TIM CURLEY RELEASED A STATEMENT LAST NIGHT SAYING – QUOTE –“THE FREEH GROUP WAS LIMITED IN ITS INVESTIGATION BY LACK OF SUBPOENA POWER AND THE RELUCTANCE OF MANY PEOPLE TO BE INTERVIEWED. INVESTIGATORS DID NOT INTERVIEW CRITICAL WITNESSES, SUCH AS MIKE MCQUEARY AND OTHERS. THE RESULT IS A LOPSIDED DOCUMENT THAT LEAVES THE MAJORITY OF THE STORY UNTOLD.” GARY SCHULTZ’ LAWYER AGREES AND SAYS “WHEN THE COMPLETE FACTUAL STORY IS TOLD BEFORE AN IMPARTIAL JURY, IT WILL BE CLEAR THAT MIKE MCQUEARY NEVER TOLD MR. SCHULTZ THAT HE WITNESSED MR. SANDUSKY ABUSING A YOUNG BOY…SCHULTZ DID NOT POSSESS OR MAINTAIN ANY SECRET FILES ABOUT SANDUSKY…AND THAT THERE WERE NO EFFORTS TO CONCEAL SANDUSKY'S BEHAVIOR. CURLEY AND SCHULTZ ARE AWAITING TRIAL ON CHARGES OF PERJURY AND FAILURE TO REPORT ABUSE.

PENN STATE’S ACTING ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DAVE JOYNER AND NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH BILL O’BRIEN ARE ALSO WEIGHING IN. JOYNER SAYS “MOVING FORWARD, WE MUST DO EVERYTHING WITHIN OUR CAPACITY TO RESTORE TRUST IN PENN STATE, AND THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT WILL PLAY A CENTRAL AND LEADING ROLE IN THAT PROCESS. THROUGH THESE DIFFICULT TIMES, WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO THE HIGHEST IDEAL AND EMBODIMENT OF THE STUDENT-ATHLETE, AND WE WILL EMERGE A STRONGER INSTITUTION.” O’BRIEN SAYS “I AM CAREFULLY READING THE REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING ANY GAPS THAT MAY EXIST, TO IDENTIFY WHAT CHANGES CAN AND SHOULD BE MADE.”

NIKE ANNOUNCED THURSDAY THAT THE COMPANY WILL REMOVE PATERNO’S NAME FROM THEIR CHILD CARE CENTER. CO-FOUNDER PHIL KNIGHT…WHO SPOKE AT JOE-PA’S MEMORIAL SERVICE…SAYS IT APPEARS JOE MADE MISSTEPS THAT LED TO HEARTBREAKING CONSEQUENCES. HE ADDS “MY LOVE FOR JOE AND HIS FAMILY REMAINS.”

FORMER FLORIDA STATE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH BOBBY BOWDEN…ONE OF JOE PATERNO’S CLOSEST FRIENDS…NOW THINKS THE JOE-PA STATUTE AT PENN STATE SHOULD BE REMOVED SO THE UNIVERSITY CAN MOVE ON. BOWDEN SAYS HE WAS SHOCKED, LIKE SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE, TO FIND OUT THE COVER-UP DETAILS IN THE FREEH COMMISSION REPORT.

JERRY SANDUSKY’S ATTORNEYS HAVE FILED THEIR FIRST APPEAL WITH THE STATE SUPERIOR COURT. IT CLAIMS JUDGE JOHN CLELAND ISSUED AN IMPROPER ORDER THAT HAD NOT BEEN AGREED UPON DURING PRE-TRIAL HEARINGS. LAWYERS SAY THIS FORCED THE DEFENSE TO SHARE ITS STRATEGY AND THOUGHT PROCESS WITH THE PROSECUTION AND JURY. SANDUSKY IS AWAITING SENTENCING ON 45 CRIMINAL COUNTS.
