ILLEGAL I-99 U-TURN

37 YEAR OLD BRENT SMITH OF LEECHBURG SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES JUST BEFORE 6 LAST NIGHT WHEN 85 YEAR OLD JOYCE FREDERICK OF JOHNSTOWN MADE A U-TURN ON I-99 IN LOGAN TOWNSHIP NEAR THE KETTLE ROAD OVERPASS. STATE POLICE SAY FREDERICK WAS NORTHBOUND WHEN SHE STOPPED ON THE SHOULDER, BACKED UP, AND MADE A LEFT TURN ACROSS BOTH LANES OF NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC…THEN TRAVELED THROUGH THE MEDIAN TO GET TO THE SOUTHBOUND LANES. HER MERCEDES T-BONED SMITH’S CAR AND SHE IS NOW CHARGED WITH CARELESS DRIVING. FREDERICK AND SMITH’S 2 PASSENGERS ONLY HAD MINOR INJURIES.

NO JAIL TIME IN DEADLY WRECK

A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 20 YEAR OLD MATTHEW DAVIS OF ALTOONA TO 5 YEARS PROBATION AND 300 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR KILLING HIS FRIEND IN AN UNDERAGE DRINKING ACCIDENT. POLICE SAY 20 YEAR OLD CORY LYNN OF ALTOONA DIED IN OCTOBER WHEN DAVIS’ SPEEDING CAR WRECKED ALONG SAINT FRANCIS LANE. DAVIS’ BLOOD ALCOHOL WAS POINT-023 PERCENT AND HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR MARIJUANA. DISTRICT ATTORNEY RICH CONSIGLIO SAYS HE AGREED TO THE NO-JAIL-TIME SENTENCE BECAUSE THE LYNN FAMILY ASKED FOR LENIENCY.

ARSON IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY?

DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT 300-THOUSAND DOLLARS AFTER AN EARLY MORNING FIRE DESTROYED A HOUSE IN BRADY TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY, ON THURSDAY. THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS THE BLAZE STARTED AROUND THE FRONT PORCH A LITTLE BEFORE 2AM. 2 TWO PEOPLE AND THEIR DOG ESCAPED SAFELY. AUTHORITIES THINK ARSON IS A POSSIBILITY AND SEVERAL ITEMS ARE BEING SENT TO A CRIME LAB FOR ANALYSIS.

AIRPORT CARRIER WANTS OUT

WTAJ REPORTS THAT COLGAN AIR DOES NOT WANT TO RE-NEW ITS CONTRACTS AT THE ALTOONA AND JOHNSTOWN AIRPORT WHEN THEY EXPIRE IN JUNE.
A REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE ALTOONA AIRPORT SAYS ONCE THAT CONTRACT IS UP, OTHER COMPANIES CAN BID TO TAKE COLGAN’S PLACE. COLGAN IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO GIVE THE AIRPORTS A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO FIND A REPLACEMENT BEFORE STOPPING SERVICES.

CORBETT WISHES PATERNO HAD DONE MORE

SPEAKING IN PHILADELPHIA YESTERDAY, GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SAID HE WISHES FORMER PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO HAD DONE MORE AFTER TELLING UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS ABOUT CHILD MOLESTATION ACCUSATIONS AGAINST JERRY SANDUSKY. CORBETT ALSO SAID THAT HE AND HIS FELLOW TRUSTEES WERE RIGHT TO FIRE PATERNO EVEN THOUGH THE COACH MET HIS LEGAL OBLIGATION TO REPORT THE ALLEGATION. SANDUSKY IS SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL IN MAY ON CHARGES OF SEXUALLY ABUSING 10 BOYS OVER A 15-YEAR PERIOD.

COLLEGE SPORTS SCANDALS

A NEW SURVEY OF MORE THAN 1-THOUSAND CAMPUS CHIEF EXECUTIVES BY THE ON-LINE PUBLICATION “INSIDE HIGHER ED” SUGGESTS WIDESPREAD CONCERN ABOUT RECENT SPORTS SCANDALS. SOME UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS THINK THEY HAVE COMPROMISED THE REPUTATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION AS A WHOLE. JUST 13 PERCENT THINK THE PRESIDENTS OF BIG TIME SPORTS SCHOOLS HAVE CONTROL OF THEIR PROGRAMS. ONE PROMINENT COLLEGE PRESIDENT TOLD THE PUBLICATION THAT THE SURVEY CONFIRMS THE NEED FOR MAJOR REFORMS, BUT DEMONSTRATES WHY THEY ARE SO UNLIKELY TO OCCUR.

ADDRESS CHANGE FOR MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER

WTAJ REPORTS THAT MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER IN STATE COLLEGE WILL CHANGE ITS ADDRESS TO “HOSPITAL DRIVE” NEXT YEAR. SPOKESPERSON NICOLE MONICA SAYS THE DECISION IS NOT IN RESPONSE TO THE PROPOSAL TO CHANGE THE NAME OF PARK AVENUE TO PATERNO WAY. INSTEAD, IT WAS MADE TO “ASSIST THE FACILITY IN THE FUTURE, SUCH AS PLANNING FOR FUTURE GROWTH AND MORE ACCURATELY DESCRIBING THE LOCATION, INCLUDING ON GPS DEVICES.” FOR STATE COLLEGE COUNCIL MEMBERS, ONE OBSTACLE TO THE PATERNO WAY PROPOSAL WAS THAT THE MEDICAL CENTER WOULD NEED TO PAY HIGH COSTS TO CHANGE STATIONARY.

PHOTO ID REQUIRED?

IT’S LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKELY THAT THE VOTER ID BILL WILL MAKE IT TO THE GOVERNOR’S DESK AND BE SIGNED, BUT DEMOCRATS AREN’T GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. SENATE DEMOCRATS SAY THEIR CAUCUS WILL BE FILING AN EQUAL PROTECTION LAWSUIT IN RESPONSE TO THE BILL…ARGUING THAT IT WOULD SUPPRESS THE VOTES OF MINORITIES, SENIORS, AND LOW INCOME RESIDENTS.
