SANDUSKY SCANDAL

NEW CHARGES WERE ANNOUNCED BY STATE PROSECUTORS YESTERDAY AND FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ, AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY NOW FACE A TOTAL OF 20 COUNTS ON 5 CHARGES INCLUDING PERJURY, FAILURE TO REPORT SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE, CHILD ENDANGERMENT, OBSTRUCTION, AND CONSPIRACY. PENNSYLVANIA ATTORNEY GENERAL LINDA KELLY SAYS THE MEN PARTICIPATED IN A “CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE TO COVER UP JERRY SANDUSKY’S ABUSE WITH TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE CHILDREN WHO WERE HIS VICTIMS.” KELLY REFUSED TO COMMENT ON IF JOE PATERNO WOULD BE LOOKING AT CHARGES IF HE WERE STILL ALIVE. THE CHARGES AGAINST SPANIER COULD CARRY A 40 YEAR JAIL SENTENCE IF HE’S CONVICTED.

AUTHORITIES WERE QUESTIONED YESTERDAY ABOUT WHY THEY WAITED SO LONG TO ARREST JERRY SANDUSKY AFTER LEARNING ABOUT HIS ALLEGED ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN 2009. STATE POLICE COMMISSIONER FRANK NOONAN SAID – QUOTE – “WE DIDN’T THINK THAT WE HAD A CASE AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME. WE NEEDED MORE EVIDENCE, IF JERRY SANDUSKY IS A PEDOPHILE, THEN THERE HAD TO BE MORE VICTIMS.”

ATTORNEYS FOR FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING THIS IS THE LATEST DESPERATE ACT BY GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT TO COVER UP AND DIVERT ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE FACT THAT HE FAILED TO WARN THE PENN STATE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE SUSPICIONS SURROUNDING JERRY SANDUSKY, AND INSTEAD KNOWINGLY ALLOWED A CHILD PREDATOR TO ROAM FREE. SPANIER CLAIMS HE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF JERRY SANDUSKY’S ABUSE OF YOUNG BOYS AND DID NOT CONSPIRE WITH FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY TO COVER IT UP.

PENN STATE RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING SPANIER WILL BE PLACED ON LEAVE, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. HE WAS REMOVED AS PRESIDENT LAST NOVEMBER, BUT CONTINUED TO SERVE AS A TENURED PROFESSOR, THOUGH ON SABBATICAL LEAVE. AFTER CHARGES WERE FILED LAST NOVEMBER, SCHULTZ RETURNED TO RETIREMENT AND CURLEY WAS PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. HE WAS RECENTLY NOTIFIED THAT HIS CONTRACT WILL NOT BE RENEWED WHEN IT EXPIRES ON JUNE 30TH.

A 57 YEAR OLD MAN HAS SPOKEN WITH PENNSYLVANIA PROSECUTORS AND TOLD THEM HE WAS RAPED BY A 22 YEAR OLD JERRY SANDUSKY IN THE BASEMENT OF A REC CENTER STARTED BY THE SANDUSKY FAMILY IN WASHINGTON P-A. IT HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS 11 IN AUGUST OF 1966 AND SINCE THEN, THE MAN TRIED TO COMMIT SUICIDE AT LEAST 3 TIMES. THE MAN TELLS KDKA-TV HE’S COMING FORWARD BECAUSE HE HOPES OTHER VICTIMS WILL HAVE THE COURAGE TO GET HELP. HE CLAIMS SANDUSKY REPEATEDLY TOLD HIM “REAL MEN DON’T CRY”…AND THEN HE TRIED TO ASSAULT HIM ON ANOTHER OCCASION BUT HE GOT AWAY. KDKA ALSO REPORTS THAT POLICE HAVE INTERVIEWED 3 OTHER CREDIBLE VICTIMS WHO CLAIM SANDUSKY MOLESTED THEM IN WASHINGTON COUNTY BACK IN THE 60’S. AUTHORITIES CAN’T PROSECUTE SINCE THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAS EXPIRED.

ATTORNEYS FOR FORMER PENN STATE ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH MIKE MCQUEARY ARE ASKING THAT A JUDGE DENY A MOTION PENN STATE FILED TO DELAY HIS DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY. PENN STATE OFFICIALS SAY THE UNIVERSITY “WOULD BE SEVERELY PREJUDICED” IF THE SUIT WERE ALLOWED TO MOVE FORWARD WHILE THE CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY AND RETIRED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ ARE ONGOING. IN THEIR RESPONSE, MCQUEARY’S ATTORNEYS ARGUE THE TRIAL, SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN JANUARY, IS ITSELF SUBJECT FOR CONTINUANCE AND THAT APPEALS COULD LAST YEARS. MCQUEARY IS SEEKING 4 MILLION DOLLARS.

PENN STATE PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON IS IN WASHINGTON DC TODAY TO ADDRESS THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB. THE LUNCHEON WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED EARLIER THIS WEEK, BUT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO THE SUPERSTORM.

TRIAL ORDERED IN TODDLER’S DEATH

25 YEAR OLD PATRICK BURKETT OF BEAVERDALE IS CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE IN THE AUGUST DEATH OF HIS GIRLFRIEND’S 22-MONTH OLD DAUGHTER…AND NOW A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE HAS ORDERED HIM TO STAND TRIAL. STATE POLICE SAY BURKETT WAS BABYSITTING RAEGAN PANICK WHEN SHE DIED FROM BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO THE HEAD. A DOCTOR TESTIFIED THAT THE TODDLER’S INJURIES WERE SIMILAR TO THOSE SUSTAINED IN A HIGH SPEED CRASH OR A FALL FROM A HIGH BUILDING. THE DEFENSE CLAIMS THE CHILD’S DEATH WAS AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT. BURKETT REMAINS IN THE COUNTY JAIL.
