PENN STATE COVER-UP?

ANOTHER ROUGH WEEKEND FOR PENN STATE AFTER C-N-N RELEASED DETAILS ABOUT A STRING OF EMAILS AMONG FORMER PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER, VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ, AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY. IN THEM, THEY TALK ABOUT HOW TO RESPOND TO MIKE MCQUEARY’S 2001 REPORT OF SEEING JERRY SANDUSKY MOLESTING A YOUNG BOY IN A CAMPUS SHOWER. THE MEN FIRST AGREE TO TALK WITH SANDUSKY, THE SECOND MILE, AND THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE, BUT CURLEY LATER SAYS HE TALKED WITH JOE PATERNO AND HE NOW WANTS TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION WITH SANDUSKY BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER TO CONTACT CHILD WELFARE. HE ALSO REFERS TO A 1998 INCIDENT WITH SANDUSKY AND A BOY IN THE SHOWERS. CURLEY AND SCHULTZ BOTH TESTIFIED BEFORE THE GRAND JURY THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT INCIDENT. THEY ARE NOW CHARGED WITH PERJURY.

A LAWYER REPRESENTING JOE PATERNO’S FAMILY SAYS THE COACH FOLLOWED UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES AND COOPERATED FULLY WITH THE INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGATIONS AGAINST JERRY SANDUSKY.

BUDGET APPROVED

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SIGNED THE NEW STATE BUDGET SATURDAY NIGHT ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE MIDNIGHT DEADLINE. HE SAYS THE 27-POINT-66 BILLION SPENDING PLAN STRENGTHENS THE STATE ECONOMY AND DOESN’T INCREASE TAXES. EARLY AND BASIC EDUCATION LEVELS WILL HOLD STEADY FOR SOME SCHOOLS, BUT INCREASE IN SOME…INCLUDING QUITE A FEW IN OUR AREA. PENN STATE FUNDING WILL HOLD AT 214-MILLION DOLLARS. THAT MEANS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON CAN POTENTIALLY PROPOSE THE LOWEST TUITION INCREASE SINCE 1967. WHEN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETS JULY 13TH, HE’S EXPECTED TO RECOMMEND A 2-POINT-9-PERCENT HIKE FOR UNIVERSITY PARK AND A 1-POINT-9 PERCENT BOOST AT COMMONWEALTH CAMPUSES. THE BUDGET ALSO HOLDS THE LINE ON FUNDING FOR PENNSYLVANIA’S OTHER STATE-RELATED AND STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES.

GEIST’S PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP BILL

STATE REPRESENTATIVE RICK GEIST’S PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP BILL WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED BY THE SENATE LAST NIGHT AND SENT TO THE GOVERNOR FOR HIS SIGNATURE. GEIST…WHO HAS BEEN WORKING ON THE BILL FOR MORE THAN A DECADE…SAYS IT WILL CREATE A HUGE INFLUX OF PRIVATE CAPITAL TO JUMPSTART NEW HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS AND HELP BEGIN THE TASK OF RE-BUILDING PENNSYLVANIA’S CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE. OUR STATE HAS MORE STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT BRIDGES THAN ANY OTHER ALONG WITH MORE THAN 8-THOUSAND MILES OF ROADWAY IN VERY POOR CONDITION ACCORDING TO THE STATE TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

POLICE SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

CAMBRIA COUNTY FIRST ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY HEATH LONG SAYS JOHNSTOWN AUTHORITIES AND STATE POLICE WILL MEET TOMORROW TO DISCUSS THE SHOOTING DEATH OF 27 YEAR OLD ELIP CHEATHAM WHO WAS KILLED BY POLICE LAST MONDAY FOLLOWING A SHOOTING OUTSIDE AN OAKHURST BAR. THEY MUST DECIDE IF DEADLY FORCE WAS JUSTIFIABLE BECAUSE CHEATHAM WAS ACCELERATING HIS CAR TOWARD THEM. A MAN WHO WAS INSIDE THE VEHICLE CLAIMS CHEATHAM WAS ONLY RUSHING HIS INJURED COUSIN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE 3 POLICE OFFICERS REMAIN ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE.
