SANDUSKY TRIAL

BELLEFONTE IS BRACED FOR THE JERRY SANDUSKY TRIAL WITH OPENING STATEMENTS THIS MORNING. THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT A WHITE, TEMPORARY CLOTH TUNNEL HAS BEEN PLACED AROUND THE BACK ENTRANCE TO THE COURTHOUSE TO PROTECT WITNESSES FROM THE MEDIA. SENIOR JUDGE JOHN CLELAND RECENTLY RULED THAT ALLEGED VICTIMS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE PSEUDONYMS WHEN TESTIFYING. THE STREETS SURROUNDING THE COURTHOUSE WILL REMAIN OPEN, BUT THEY ARE CROWDED WITH MEDIA TRUCKS AND EXTRA SECURITY IS ON HAND. ON FRIDAY, JUDGE CLELAND ISSUED ANOTHER ORDER DENYING A DEFENSE REQUEST TO HAVE THE CHARGES DISMISSED. THE 7 WOMAN/5 MAN JURY WAS SELECTED LAST WEEK.

PENN STATE HAS ALREADY SPENT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON ITS OWN INVESTIGATION, LED BY FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH. THAT REPORT IS EXPECTED TO BE ISSUED AFTER THE TRIAL, MAYBE IN AUGUST. THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE HAS AN “ACTIVE AND ONGOING” RELATED INVESTIGATION. THE NCAA AND THE BIG 10 CONFERENCE ARE BOTH LOOKING INTO THE SCANDAL. AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS INVESTIGATING WHETHER PENN STATE VIOLATED THE CLERY ACT, WHICH REQUIRES REPORTING OF CRIMES ON CAMPUS.

A WILKESBARRE NEWSPAPER REPORTED SUNDAY THAT JOE PATERNO’S LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT HAS BEEN ORDERED PERMANENTLY SEALED FROM PUBLIC VIEW ALONG WITH ALL RELATED COURT FILINGS AT THE REQUEST OF A FAMILY ATTORNEY. A FAMILY SPOKESMAN SAID THE STEP WAS INTENDED TO PRESERVE “A MEASURE OF PRIVACY” FOR THE FAMILY AND WAS “NOT AN UNUSUAL REQUEST FOR HIGH-PROFILE INDIVIDUALS.”

2 DIE IN CRASHES

A LEWISTOWN MAN WAS KILLED IN A ONE-VEHICLE CRASH SATURDAY ON GUSS ROAD IN DECATUR TOWNSHIP. STATE POLICE SAY 30 YEAR OLD RICKY LEE RHODES JUNIOR FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A LEFT CURVE AND HIT AN EMBANKMENT. HIS CAR ROLLED ONTO ITS ROOF, PARTIALLY EJECTING RHODES WHO WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. ONE MAN IS DEAD AND ANOTHER IS SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER A CRASH IN WELLERSBURG, SOMERSET COUNTY, ABOUT 2 SATURDAY MORNING.

STATE POLICE SAY RONALD STREETS WAS NORTHBOUND ON STATE ROUTE 160, WHEN HE LOST CONTROL IN A CURVE AND WENT OFF THE ROAD. STREETS AND HIS PASSENGER ANTHONY WINTER WERE THROWN FROM THE VEHICLE.WINTER WAS KILLED AND STREETS HAS MAJOR INJURIES. NEITHER MAN WAS WEARING A SEAT BELT.

FIREFIGHTER CRITICAL

19 YEAR OLD GEESEYTOWN FIREFIGHTER CORBIN MOLINETS IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL FOLLOWING A CRASH ABOUT 6:30 SATURDAY NIGHT ON LOOP ROAD IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE MOLINETS SWERVED TO AVOID AN ANIMAL AND HIS PICKUP SLAMMED INTO A SUPPORT PILLAR FOR ROUTE 36. IT THEN SLID DOWN THE SIDE OF AN EMBANKMENT.

SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET VOTE

THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL BOARD IS SCHEDULED TO VOTE ON A PROPOSED 116-POINT-6 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET AT TONIGHT’S MEETING. PROPERTY TAXES WILL INCREASE 2-POINT-4 PERCENT UNLESS THERE ARE ANY MAJOR SURPRISES IN THE STATE BUDGET.

DETOURS

A 5 DAY DETOUR BEGINS TODAY FOR THE IRONVILLE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT ON ROUTE 1014 OVER THE LITTLE JUNIATA RIVER NEAR TYRONE IN SNYDER TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. 24 HOUR FLAGGING WILL BE UNDERWAY. ONCE THE ROADWAY TIE-IN WORK IS COMPLETED, THE CONTRACTOR WILL SWITCH TRAFFIC ONTO THE NEW ROADWAY AND WILL BEGIN DEMOLITION OF THE OLD BRIDGE. THE ENTIRE PROJECT SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY MID-OCTOBER.

THE JUNIATA 8TH STREET BRIDGE IN ALTOONA IS CLOSED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS…AND THAT WILL MEAN A 4-MILE DETOUR OVER CHESTNUT AVENUE…7TH AND 8TH STREETS…AND 6TH AND 7TH AVENUES. THE ENTIRE BRIDGE PROJECT WILL TAKE ABOUT 2-AND-A-HALF MONTHS.
