MEMORIAL DAY 2012

TODAY IS MEMORIAL DAY, A FEDERAL HOLIDAY. FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES ARE ALL CLOSED ALONG WITH SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, LIQUOR STORES, AND PENNDOT DRIVER’S LICENSE CENTERS. THERE WILL BE NO REGULAR MAIL DELIVERY.

THE CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL DAY PARADE BEGINS AT 8:45AM AT ALTOONA’S BAVARIAN HALL.

 

THE JUNIATA CIVIC ASSOCIATION HOLDS A PARADE AT 9, STARTING AT NORTH 8TH STREET AND ENDING ON BROADWAY.

 

THE BLAIR COUNTY WAR VETERANS COUNCIL PARADE GETS UNDERWAY AT 10 ON 8TH AVENUE AND HEADS INTO DOWNTOWN ALTOONA.

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG AMERICAN LEGION PARADE STARTS AT 9:30.

PARADES ARE AT 10 IN EBENSBURG AND TYRONE.


IN DUNCANSVILLE, THE ANNUAL V-F-W PARADE AT STARTS AT NOON AT THE ANTIQUE DEPOT.

BOALSBURG, THE “BIRTHPLACE OF MEMORIAL DAY” HAS THE 32ND ANNUAL FUN RUN SET FOR AT 8:30 THIS MORNING…THEN THE FIREMEN’S CARNIVAL FROM 9 TO 5…AND A COMMUNITY ADDRESS ABOUT THE BOALSBURG LEGACY STARTS AT 6. THE VILLAGE OF BOALSBURG WILL ALSO CELEBRATE WITH A CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT.

AND AT DELGROSSO’S AMUSEMENT PARK IN TIPTON, ALL VETERANS AND SERVICE MEMBERS RIDE AND SLIDE FREE.THE PARK WRAPS UP MEMORIAL DAY WITH FIREWORKS.

NASTY WEATHESEVERE THUNDERSTORMS SWEPT THROUGH THE AREA LAST NIGHT. LIGHTNING STRUCK A TREE THEN THE METAL ROOF AT VILLAGE RESTORATIONS IN FRANKSTOWN TOWNSHIP. GEESEYTOWN FIRE CREWS SAY A SMALL FIRE BROKE OUT ON THE SECOND FLOOR, BUT IT WAS QUICKLY PUT OUT. UTILITY POLES AND POWER LINES WERE KNOCKED DOWN IN BLAIR AND CAMBRIA COUNTY, RESULTING IN SOME POWER OUTAGES. AND NORFOLK SOUTHERN HAD TO TEMPORARILY HALT SERVICE WHILE CREWS REMOVED DOWNED TREE LIMBS FROM THE TRACKS.

 

2 DIE IN WRECKS

STATE POLICE IN BLAIR COUNTY SAY SPEED IS TO BLAME FOR A FATAL WRECK SATURDAY AFTERNOON ON I-99 IN GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP NEAR THE ROARING SPRING EXIT. 19 YEAR OLD ROY MILLER THE 3RD OF CRESSON LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR…BOUNCED OFF A GUARDRAIL…AND ROLLED OVER 3 TIMES. MILLER WAS WEARING A SEATBELT. HIS PASSENGER, 19 YEAR OLD JOSHUA HARSHBERGER OF CRESSON WAS NOT BUCKLED UP. HE WAS EJECTED AND TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM IN FAIR CONDITION.

A MAN IS DEAD AND HIS FEMALE PASSENGER SERIOUSLY INJURED FOLLOWING A MOTORCYCLE CRASH AROUND 1PM SUNDAY IN CATHARINE TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY A COUPLE WAS RIDING ALONG STATE ROUTE 22 WHEN THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL…VEERED INTO THE OTHER LANE…AND HIT A CAR THAT WAS PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE PASSENGER WAS FLOWN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER. THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

6 D-U-I ARRESTS

STATE POLICE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY CONDUCTED A SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT ON STATE ROUTE 271 IN BLACKLICK TOWNSHIP SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING. COPS ARRESTED 5 PEOPLE FOR DRUNK DRIVING AND 1 FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS. THEY ISSUED 11 CITATIONS AND 1 PERSON WAS CITED FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING.

DOG BEATEN

STATE POLICE IN PHILIPSBURG ARE LOOKING FOR THE BURGLAR WHO SERIOUSLY INJURED A LARGE DOG WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT A HOME ON PORT MATILDA HIGHWAY IN RUSH TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY. THE VICTIM TOLD POLICE SOMEONE ENTERED HER HOUSE, AND WAS SURPRISED BY THE DOG. AUTHORITIES THINK THE SUSPECT HIT THE DOG IN THE HEAD WITH A BASEBALL BAT AND RAN OFF.

ANOTHER TAX IN ALTOONA?

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE CITY OF ALTOONA MAY SOON ADD A COMMUTER TAX. THE EARNED INCOME TAX WOULD APPLY TO PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE CITY, BUT LIVE ELSEWHERE AND IT WOULD BE IN ADDITION TO EARNED INCOME TAX THEY’RE ALREADY PAYING TO THEIR HOME MUNICIPALITIES, HOME SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND THE CITY ITSELF. THIS IS ALL PART OF THE CITY JOINING THE STATE’S DISTRESSED MUNICIPALITIES PROGRAM.

FISH FOR FREE

THE PENNSYLVANIA FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION’S FIRST FISH FOR FREE DAY IS TODAY. THAT MEANS ANYONE CAN FISH ON ANY OF PENNSYLVANIA’S WATERWAYS WITHOUT A FISHING LICENSE. ALL OTHER REGULATIONS DO APPLY. THE SECOND FISH FOR FREE DATES IS LABOR DAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD.
