PRISONERS REMAIN HOSPITALIZED

5 STATE PRISONERS REMAIN UNDER GUARD AT ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM AFTER THAT DEADLY CAR/PRISON BUS CRASH IN DUNCANSVILLE TUESDAY AFTERNOON. 27 YEAR OLD NICOLE WAGNER DIED AFTER SLAMMING INTO THE BUS ALONG OLD ROUTE 22. WITNESSES SAY WAGNER CROSSED THE CENTER LINE SEVERAL TIMES PRIOR TO THE IMPACT AND SHE DIED AT THE SCENE. AUTHORITIES ARE STILL INVESTIGATING. 5 OTHER PRISONERS WERE TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES THEN TAKEN TO A STATE PRISON IN INDIANA COUNTY.

PEDESTRIAN KILLED

A PEDESTRIAN WAS STRUCK AND KILLED BY A TRACTOR TRAILER LAST NIGHT ON ROUTE 322 IN RUSH TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY. STATE POLICE TELL THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES IT HAPPENED IN THE WESTBOUND LANES A FEW MILES SOUTHEAST OF PHILIPSBURG AROUND 6:45. TROOPERS ARE INTERVIEWING MULTIPLE WITNESSES AS PART OF THEIR INVESTIGATION.

ALTOONA FIRE

ALTOONA FIREFIGHTERS BATTLED A VACANT HOUSE FIRE AT 11-18 19TH AVENUE LAST NIGHT. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. MEANWHILE, ALTOONA FIRE INSPECTOR MIKE TOFANO SAYS MONDAY NIGHT’S FIRE ON THE 200 BLOCK OF 5TH AVENUE WAS DELIBERATELY SET. SEVERAL HOMES WERE DAMAGED.

PATERNO FAMILY SLAMS AUTHORS

THE PATERNO FAMILY IS FUMING OVER THE JUST-RELEASED BOOK “GAME OVER: JERRY SANDUSKY, PENN STATE, AND THE CULTURE OF SILENCE”. IN A STATEMENT ISSUED THROUGH THEIR LAWYER, THE FAMILY SAYS IT NOT ONLY CONTAINS FACTUAL INACCURACIES BUT “DISTORTS THE TRUTH.” THEY DISPUTE THAT JOE-PA KNEW ABOUT AN INCIDENT IN 1998 THAT LED TO SANDUSKY BEING INVESTIGATED BY POLICE. NO CHARGES WERE EVER FILED IN THAT CASE. THE BOOK ALSO CLAIMS THAT PATERNO KNEW ABOUT SANDUSKY’S ALLEGED CONDUCT AND PUSHED FOR HIS RETIREMENT IN 1999. THE FAMILY SAYS THAT IS BASELESS AND UNSUPPORTED BY ANY EVIDENCE”. THE STATEMENT SAYS – QUOTE --THESE AND MANY OTHER LIES, ERRORS AND SLANDEROUS ALLEGATIONS ARE PROOF THAT THE ONLY OBJECTIVE FOR THESE AUTHORS WAS TO EXPLOIT THIS TRAGEDY FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL GAIN BY PRODUCING A FICTIONALIZED NARRATIVE THAT SMEARS THE REPUTATION OF JOE PATERNO.”

ELDERLY MAN ROBBED & BEATEN AT HOME

ALTOONA POLICE SAY A 75 YEAR OLD MAN WAS ROBBED AND BRUTALLY BEATEN AROUND 9 TUESDAY MORNING INSIDE HIS HOME ALONG THE 500 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. THE VICTIM WAS ADMITTED TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM WITH MODERATE TO SEVERE INJURIES. A FRIEND TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THE MAN HAD SOLD A CAR OVER THE WEEKEND AND HE ESTIMATES THE ROBBER GOT AWAY WITH ABOUT 11-HUNDRED DOLLARS.

ATTEMPTED MURDER TRIAL UNDERWAY

RANDALL BROOKS OF HOWARD IS REPRESENTING HIMSELF AT HIS CENTRE COUNTY ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE TRIAL AND YESTERDAY HE QUESTIONED HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND ON THE STAND. BROOKS IS CHARGED WITH SHOOTING HER NEW BOYFRIEND IN THE SHOULDER DURING A 2009 DRIVE-BY ALONG ROUTE 64. THE WOMAN TOLD THE JURY BROOKS SENT HER HUNDREDS OF TEXT MESSAGES AND ALSO APPROACHED HER AND ADMITTED TO USING HIS FATHER’S VEHICLE AND SHOTGUN IN THE SHOOTING. TESTIMONY RESUMES THIS MORNING.

UNDER A NEW STATE LAW, EVERY VOTER MUST SHOW A PHOTO I-D AND STATE OFFICIALS WANT TO MAKE THAT EASIER FOR THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE ONE. SECRETARY OF THE COMMONWEALTH CAROL AICHELLE SAYS ANYONE WHO PREVIOUSLY HAD A STATE DRIVER’S LICENSE OR NON-DRIVER I-D CARD CAN QUALIFY FOR A FREE PHOTO I-D CARD THROUGH PENNDOT.YOU’LL NEED TO PROVIDE A SOCIAL SECURITY CARD AND ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION.
FOR LICENSES THAT EXPIRED PRIOR TO 1990, FOLKS WILL HAVE TO CALL PENNDOT’S CUSTOMER CARE CENTER TO VERIFY THAT YOUR INFORMATION IS STILL IN THE SYSTEM. THE NEW VOTER I-D LAW WON’T BE STRICTLY ENFORCED UNTIL THE NOVEMBER ELECTION.
