SANDUSKY SCANDAL

THE PENN STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MET BEHIND CLOSED DOORS FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS LAST NIGHT IN STATE COLLEGE TO DISCUSS WHETHER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON HAD THE AUTHORITY TO SIGN THE NCAA SANCTIONS WITHOUT THE BOARD’S APPROVAL. ERICKSON SAYS HE ACCEPTED THE SANCTIONS TO AVOID A POSSIBLE MULTI-YEAR DEATH PENALTY. THE BOARD RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING ERICKSON’S ACTIONS WERE JUSTIFIED. THE STATEMENT ALSO READS “THE UNIVERSITY AND BOARD RESOLVE TO MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER TO RECOGNIZE THE HISTORICAL EXCELLENCE IN PENN STATE’S ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC PROGRAMS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO DEMONSTRATING OUR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN COMPLYING WITH THE SANCTIONS. PENN STATE WILL REMAIN A WORLD-CLASS EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION OF WHICH OUR STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF AND ALUMNI CAN BE JUSTIFIABLY PROUD AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT BY THE NITTANY NATION WHEN WE TAKE THE FIELD THIS FALL.”

FORMER PENN STATE WIDE RECEIVERS COACH MIKE MCQUEARY TESTIFIED AT JERRY SANDUSKY’S TRIAL, SAYING HE WANTS HIS JOB BACK…AND NOW WJAC TV IS REPORTING THAT MCQUEARY’S ATTORNEYS ARE IN TALKS WITH PENN STATE ON A HEFTY FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT. MCCONOUGHEY’S PRELIMINARY HEARING WAS CONTINUED YESTERDAY BECAUSE HIS ATTORNEY IS ASKING THAT THE CASE BE MOVED TO JUVENILE COURT. HAMMOND…WHO WRESTLED AND PLAYED FOOTBALL…WOULD HAVE BEEN A SOPHOMORE AT EVERETT AREA HIGH SCHOOL NEXT MONTH. HE WAS BURIED YESTERDAY.

HIKER INJURED IN SOMERSET COUNTY

SOMERSET COUNTY AUTHORITIES SAY A 19 YEAR OLD WOMAN WAS FLOWN TO JOHNSTOWN’S MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER EARLY WEDNESDAY AFTER SHE FELL ABOUT 15 FEET FROM BEAM ROCKS ALONG THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS TRAIL. NO WORD ON HER CONDITION AND STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING.
IN 2008, 2 HIKERS DIED FROM FALLS AT THE ROCK.THEY WERE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A POTENT ANTIHISTAMINE.

FAMILY LOSES EVERYTHING

JOHN AND SARA ESCHELMAN, A TEENAGE BOY, A LITTLE GIRL, AND 2 DOGS ESCAPED SAFELY BUT LOST EVERYTHING WHEN THEIR HOME WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING ALONG CHESTNUT STREET IN NEW ENTERPRISE, BEDFORD COUNTY. OFFICIALS SAY THE BLAZE BEGAN IN THE REAR OF THE HOUSE AND IT BURNED TO THE GROUND WITHIN 2 AND A HALF HOURS.

THEY CALL HIM “THE STREAK”

FOR THE 16TH TIME, 50 YEAR OLD KELVIN FLORY OF BELLEFONTE HAS BEEN CAUGHT RUNNING AROUND NAKED AND TOUCHING HIMSELF IN PUBLIC. HE WAS TACKLED BY STATE COLLEGE POLICE EARLY WEDNESDAY RUNNING THROUGH COMMUNITY FIELD ALONG SOUTH ATHERTON STREET. HE’S JAILED ON MISDEMEANOR COUNTS OF INDECENT EXPOSURE, LOITERING, AND OPEN LEWDNESS. THIS IS FLORY’S 3RD ARREST THIS MONTH ALONE, AND HIS 4TH SINCE MAY.

SCHOOLS DON’T MAKE THE GRADE

SOME ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN ALTOONA ARE NOW ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP TO A PARTICIPATING PUBLIC OR NON-PUBLIC SCHOOL UNDER THE “OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP TAX CREDIT PROGRAM.”ACCORDING TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THE LIST OF LOW-ACHIEVING SCHOOLS INCLUDES: WRIGHT ELEMENTARY IN ALTOONA…WASSON AVENUE, OSCEOLA MILLS, AND WEST BRANCH AREA ELEMENTARIES IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY…WEST SIDE ELEMENTARY AND GREATER JOHNSTOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL... AND TURKEYFOOT VALLEY ELEMENTARY IN SOMERSET COUNTY.

OZONE LEVELS

RESIDENTS OF ALTOONA, STATE COLLEGE, JOHNSTOWN, AND SEVERAL OTHER METROPOLITAN AREAS WILL SOON RECEIVE NOTIFICATIONS WHEN LOCAL GROUND-LEVEL OZONE CONCENTRATIONS REACH UNSAFE LEVELS. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SAYS IT NEEDED TO INCREASE REPORTING AFTER NOTICING MULTIPLE OZONE SPIKES ACROSS THE STATE WHEN THIS SUMMER’S HEAT WAVES “COOKED” POLLUTION FROM POWER PLANTS, INDUSTRY, VEHICLES AND HOUSEHOLDS, THUS CREATING POOR AIR QUALITY.
