SANDUSKY TRIAL

THE DEFENSE RESTED YESTERDAY WITHOUT PUTTING JERRY SANDUSKY ON THE STAND. INSTEAD, THE DEFENSE CALLED DR. JOHNATHAN DRANOV. HE’S A FAMILY FRIEND OF MIKE MCQUEARY’S AND WAS APPARENTLY SUPPOSED TO SAY THAT MCQUEARY MADE INCONSISTENT STATEMENTS. DRANOV ACTUALLY TESTIFIED THAT MCQUEARY WAS SHAKEN UP AFTER WITNESSING SANDUSKY MOLESTING A BOY IN THE PENN STATE SHOWERS. THE DEFENSE ALSO CALLED SEVERAL CHARACTER WITNESSES, INCLUDING 2 FORMER SECOND MILE KIDS WHO TESTIFIED THAT NOTHING INAPPROPRIATE EVER HAPPENED WITH SANDUSKY. ONE OF THE YOUNG MEN SAID INVESTIGATORS TRIED TO PRESSURE HIM INTO INCRIMINATING THE FORMER PENN STATE ASSISTANT COACH.

A FEMALE JUROR GOT SICK YESTERDAY AND WAS REPLACED BY AN ALTERNATE.

THE DEFENSE AND PROSECUTION WILL DELIVER CLOSING ARGUMENTS THIS MORNING, THEN THE JUDGE WILL CHARGE THE JURY AND THEY WILL BEGIN DELIBERATIONS. THE JURY WILL BE SEQUESTERED AT A LOCAL HOTEL UNTIL THEIR WORK IS COMPLETED. SOME LEGAL EXPERTS PREDICT THE JURY WILL QUICKLY REACH A VERDICT…AND OTHERS THINK THEY MAY NEED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME…DUE TO ALL THE TESTIMONY THEY HAVE TO REVIEW.

ROBBERY TRIAL CONTINUES

THE ROBBERY AND BURGLARY TRIAL OF MAKSIM ILLARIONOV, DMITRI LITVINOV, AND ANATOLI VERETNOV CONTINUED YESTERDAY AT THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE ANNEX. SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO WORK AT THE CENTRE HALL DOLLAR GENERAL STORE TESTIFIED THAT THE MEN ROBBED THEM AT GUNPOINT IN FEBRUARY 2010. ONE EMPLOYEE SAID HE WAS KICKED IN THE HEAD AND ANOTHER HAD A GUN POINTED IN HIS FACE. THE WOMAN WHO WAS FORCED TO OPEN THE SAFE TOLD THE JURY SHE WAS AFRAID THE ROBBERS WOULD KILL HER. EXTRA POLICE ARE ON DUTY AT THE TRIAL BECAUSE LITVINOV ALLEGEDLY TOLD A FELLOW PRISONER THAT HE PLANS TO SHOOT UP THE COURTROOM.

ALTOONA STABBING VICTIM HOSPITALIZED

AN ALTOONA STABBING VICTIM IS IN FAIR CONDITION AT ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER. POLICE SAY JOHN FREDERICK AND THE VICTIM ARGUED OVER A FEMALE AND FREDERICK STABBED THE OTHER MAN 3 TIMES AT A HOUSE ON THE 18-HUNDRED BLOCK OF 12TH AVENUE. THE 911 CALL CAME FROM INSIDE FOOR’S SERVICE STATION NEARBY AND POLICE ACTUALLY COLLECTED BLOOD EVIDENCE FROM THAT LOCATION. FREDERICK IS JAILED ON 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS BAIL.

MOTORCYCLISTS INJURED

2 MEN ARE HOSPITALIZED AFTER THEIR MOTORCYCLES CRASHED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ALONG ROUTE 164 EAST OF MARTINSBURG IN BLAIR COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY 74 YEAR OLD CHARLES MILLER OF EVERETT SUFFERED CRITICAL INJURIES AND 75 YEAR OLD ROY PROPST OF CLEARVILLE HAD MODERATE INJURIES. MILLER WAS MAKING A TURN WHEN PROPST READ-ENDED HIM. BOTH MEN WERE WEARING HELMETS AND WERE TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER.

MISSING WOMAN LOCATED

A MISSING WOMAN WHO HAS MEMORY PROBLEMS WAS FOUND YESTERDAY, ABOUT 20 MILES FROM HER PARK FOREST NEIGHBORHOOD. 62 YEAR OLD BIBISAKINEH RASTEGARY OF PATTON TOWNSHIP WENT FOR A WALK TUESDAY MORNING…WAS SEEN THAT EVENING IN HALFMOON TOWNSHIP…AND WAS SPOTTED YESTERDAY WALKING ALONG I-99 IN BLAIR COUNTY. RASTEGARY WAS TAKEN TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER FOR OBSERVATION.

ARSON SUSPECT IN COURT

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 32 YEAR OLD JENNIFER YATSKY OF PORTAGE WAIVED HER PRELIMINARY HEARING ON ARSON AND OTHER CHARGES. AUTHORITIES SAY YATSKY WAS HIGH ON BATH SALTS WHEN SHE BURNED DOWN HER HOUSE IN APRIL. NO ONE WAS INJURED. YATSKY REMAINS FREE ON BOND.

CLOSE TO A BUDGET AGREEMENT

THOUGH DETAILS HAVE NOT BEEN PUBLICIZED, EDUCATION ADVOCATES IN HARRISBURG ARE HOPING TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF A DEAL ON THE STATE BUDGET COULD RESTORE A LOT OF FUNDING TO LOCAL PROGRAMS. GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SAYS LAWMAKERS HAVE AGREED TO A 27-POINT-6-5 BILLION-DOLLAR BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR. A SPOKESMAN FOR SENATE MAJORITY LEADER DOMINIC PILEGGI SAYS THE SPENDING PLAN WILL RESTORE SOME OF THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED CUTS TO K-THROUGH-12 SCHOOL PROGRAMS, THOUGH NO SPECIFIC NUMBERS ARE BEING RELEASED. A BUDGET MUST BE IN PLACE BEFORE THE NEW FISCAL YEAR BEGINS JULY 1ST.

HOLLIDAYSBURG SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS BUDGET

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG AREA SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT VOTED 6 TO 3 IN FAVOR OF A 42-POINT-9 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET THAT INCLUDES NO TAX INCREASE. THE DISTRICT WILL TAKE 781-THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE RESERVE FUND TO BALANCE THE SPENDING PLAN. SEVERAL BOARD MEMBERS WANTED A 2-MILL TAX HIKE THAT WOULD GENERATE 400-THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY. THE BOARD PREVIOUSLY VOTED TO CLOSE ALLEGHENY ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN DUNCANSVILLE.

THERE WILL ALSO BE SOME PUBLIC METERED PARKING SPACES OUTSIDE THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT. CAMTRAN WILL OFFER 25 CENT BUS RIDES WITH FREE TRANSFERS ON ALL URBAN AND RURAL FIXED ROUTES.
