FLOODING IN CAMBRIA COUNTY

CLASSES ARE CANCELLED AGAIN TODAY FOR NORTHERN CAMBRIA ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS. PROFESSIONAL CREWS ARE STILL CLEANING UP AFTER MONDAY NIGHT’S FLOODING. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS MAY ALSO BE CLOSED TOMORROW. THE HIGH SCHOOL RE-OPENED YESTERDAY.

A FATAL CRASH YESTERDAY MORNING IN INDIANA COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY a small passenger bus FROM EBENSBURG-BASED “SENIOR-LIFE” RAN A RED LIGHT and COLLIDED WITH A CAR IN WHITE TOWNSHIP. SANDRA LIVINGTON WAS EJECTED FROM THE BUS AND DIED LATER AT A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL. BUS PASSENGER Grace Renwick was taken by helicopter to JOHNSTOWN’S Memorial Medical Center. Cathryn Reeger AND Frank Fazio, the driver of the car, were taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center. TheIr injures were not considered to be serious. THE BUS DRIVER, 20 YEAR OLD MICHAEL SMITH, WAS NOT HURT.

Holiday FATALITIES

IT WAS A DEADLY LABOR DAY WEEKEND WITH ALMOST DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF FATALITIES AS LAST YEAR. STATE POLICE say 11 people died and more than 260 were injured IN 661 WRECKS. 77 OF THE CRASHES, INCLUDING 2 OF THE FATALS WERE ALCOHOL-RELATED. Troopers cited 819 people for NOT WEARING seatbelts…and HANDED OUT more than 91-HUNDRED speeding TICKETS. Last year 6 people died OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

MAJOR MILK SPILL

A milk tanker SPILLED THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF MILK WHEN IT OVERTURNED on Sproul Mountain Road in Northern Bedford County Wednesday morning. the driver WAS TRAPPED INSIDE THE WRECKAGE UNTIL HE WAS RESCUED. HAZMAT CREWS WERE CALLED TO TRY TO KEEP THE MILK FROM GETTING INTO NEARBY streams.   

hearing following attempted murder

logan township police say 23 year old joshua shannon of altoona is jailed on charges including attempted homicide and he is due at a preliminary hearing today. last thursday night, shannon allegedly went to mervin sollenberger’s home near coupon and told him his pickup was stuck nearby. sollenberger gave him a ride on an a-t-v, but shannon clubbed him causing severe blood loss and serious injuries. sollenberger EVENTUALLY fought him off. he told sollenberger he would bury him next to another man who also turned information over to police in another case. shannon’s bail is set at 100-thousand dollars cash. ONCE SOLLENBERGER GOT TO A pittsburgh hospital, DOCTORS FOUND A SMALL-CALIBRE BULLET WOUND IN HIS NASAL CAVITY. HE’S STILL RECOVERING.

2 gunmen SENTENCED

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 19 YEAR OLD SHAQUILLE MCCORD OF THE SOLOMON HOMES TO 7 TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON. HE WAS CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE FOR THE 2012 SHOOTING OF JEREMIAH HASELRIG.

2 TO 5 YEARS IN PRISON IS THE SENTENCE FOR 28 YEAR OLD EDWARD REVIERE OF JOHNSTOWN. HE WAS CONVICTED OF SHOOTING HIS COUSIN, ANDRE SAMPSON, IN THE KIDNEY FOLLOWING AN ARGUMENT OUTSIDE A CITY BAR LAST OCTOBER.

LONG PRISON TERM

56 YEAR OLD STEPHEN WEAVER OF SCHELLSBURG WAS CONVICTED LAST YEAR OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING 2 FEMALE RELATIVES WHEN THEY WERE TEENAGERS…AND YESTERDAY A BEDFORD COUNTY JUDGE SENTENCED HIM TO 19 TO 56 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. WEAVER IS BEING KEPT IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JAIL WHILE HE AWAITS TRIAL IN FEDERAL COURT. AUTHORITIES FOUND A NUMBER OF PIPE BOMBS WHEN THEY SEARCHED HIS PROPERTY IN 2011.

REPRESENTATIVE CRITICAL

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DICK HESS OF BEDFORD IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL. A REPUBLICAN CAUCUS SPOKESMAN SAYS THERE WERE COMPLICATIONS FOLLOWING A LEG OPERATION. THE 74 YEAR OLD HESS IS CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE.

CORMAN VERSUS NCAA LAWSUIT CONTINUES

State Senator Jake Corman’s lawsuit against the ncaa WILL MOVE FORWARD. YESTERDAY, Commonwealth Court ruled against the NCAA’S preliminary objections. Corman WANTS TO MAKE SURE the 60 million DOLLARS IN Penn State FINES ARE USED TO HELP CHILDREN in Pennsylvania. The next phase in the proceedings is a court ordered response by the NCAA.

SUPPORTING JOE-PA

A local group THAT CALLS ITSELF “FRIENDS OF JOE” IS PUTTING UP A BILLBOARD ALONG ROUTE 322 IN CENTRE HALL TO show their support for LATE FOOTBALL COACH Joe Paterno and his 409 wins. The billboard will be UNVEILED JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT Friday morning and stay up through midnight Sunday. IT will be displayed for each of the 7 home football games this season.

REPAIRING BRIDGES

ONE state lawmaker is listing his transportation priorities. Representative Stephen Bloom, A CUMBERLAND COUNTY REPUBLICAN, says his proposal would require PennDOT to repair weight-restricted or closed bridges now, before turning to bike lanes and other work he refers to as "nice to haves." LAST MONTH, PENNDOT ANNOUNCED WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS AND CLOSURES FOR AN ADDITIONAL 1-THOUSAND STRUCTURALLY-DEFICIENT BRIDGES…MANY OF THEM IN OUR AREA. BLOOM SAYS HE ALREADY HAS 26 CO-SPONSORS FOR HIS LEGISLATION.
