SANDUSKY SCANDAL

FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER IS SUING THE UNIVERSITY FOR ACCESS TO HIS OLD EMAILS...AND THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT A HEARING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED AUGUST 17TH AT THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. SPANIER SAYS HE NEEDS THE EMAILS SO HE CAN COOPERATE WITH THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE SANDUSKY SCANDAL, BUT SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY THEY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED BY THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE NOT TO RELEASE THE INFORMATION BECAUSE IT COULD COMPROMISE THE INVESTIGATION. MEANWHILE, THE FINAL REPORT FROM THE LOUIS FREEH COMMISSION COULD BE RELEASED BY THE END OF THIS MONTH.

DESPITE THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL, PENN STATE DONORS ARE STILL GIVING VERY GENEROUSLY. UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED MONDAY THAT THEY RECEIVED MORE THAN 208 MILLION DOLLARS FROM ALUMNI AND FRIENDS. THAT’S THE SECOND HIGHEST YEAR ON RECORD, RIGHT BEHIND LAST YEAR WHEN PENN STATE GOT AN 88 MILLION DOLLAR GIFT TO ESTABLISH THE PEGULA ICE ARENA. TUITION GOING UP

STUDENTS ARE GOING TO PAY MORE FOR TUITION AT PENNSYLVANIA'S 14 STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES. THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE STATE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION HAS APPROVED A 3-PERCENT TUITION INCREASE FOR THE 2012-13 ACADEMIC YEAR. THE NEW ANNUAL TUITION RATE FOR FULL-TIME, RESIDENT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ATTENDING ANY OF THE 14 UNIVERSITIES BEGINNING THIS FALL WILL BE 64-HUNDRED-28 DOLLARS. NEARLY 120-THOUSAND STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING?

JOHNSTOWN POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A POSSIBLE ATTEMPTED CHILD ABDUCTION. 2 BOYS, AGES 7 AND 12, TOLD POLICE THEY WERE RIDING BIKES ALONG RAILROAD STREET IN CONEMAUGH BORO SHORTLY AFTER 3 MONDAY AFTERNOON WHEN 2 OLDER, WHITE MEN IN A DARK BLUE TRUCK APPROACHED THEM AND TRIED TO GET THE BOYS TO GET INTO THE VEHICLE WHICH WAS MISSING THE BACK LEFT REAR HUBCAP. THE BROTHERS TOOK OFF FOR HOME INSTEAD. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL THE NON-EMERGENCY POLICE NUMBER AT 1-800-281-16-80.

ACCUSED KILLER ORDERED TO TRIAL

CAMBRIA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY KELLY CALLIHAN SAYS SHE WILL DECIDE WHETHER SHE WILL SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST MARQUIS NEAL BEFORE HIS ARRAIGNMENT IN AUGUST. NEAL…WHO WAS ORDERED TO TRIAL YESTERDAY…IS CHARGED IN THE OCTOBER SHOOTING DEATH OF 21-YEAR OLD J-QUAN LEWIS OUTSIDE THE OAKHURST HOMES. NEAL WAS ARRESTED IN NEW JERSEY BACK IN MARCH. CO-DEFENDANT ANTHONY HARVEY HAS WAIVED HIS CASE TO COURT.

FATAL CRASHES

9 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 312 INJURED IN CRASHES INVESTIGATED BY STATE TROOPERS OVER THE 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY DRIVING PERIOD. THE DEPARTMENT SAYS COPS WERE ON THE SCENE OF 845 CRASHES BETWEEN THE 4TH AND 8TH OF JULY. 85 OF THEM WERE ALCOHOL RELATED…AND 4 OF THE VICTIMS WERE NOT WEARING SEATBELTS.  

FATHER WANTS CONFESSION THROWN OUT

24 YEAR OLD JUSTIN CHARLES SENIOR OF SOUTH FORK IS CHARGED IN THE SHAKEN BABY DEATH OF HIS 7 WEEK OLD SON, JUSTIN JUNIOR, BACK IN DECEMBER…BUT NOW HIS DEFENSE ATTORNEY IS ASKING THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE TO THROW OUT HIS CONFESSION. THE LAWYER CLAIMS CHARLES WAS UNDER SUCH EMOTIONAL STRESS AFTER THE BABY’S BODY WAS SEIZED BY POLICE AT THE FUNERAL SERVICE THAT HIS STATEMENT WAS NOT KNOWINGLY AND VOLUNTARILY GIVEN. CHARLES’ TRIAL IS SET TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 24TH.

ALTOONA COUNTERFEITER PLEADS GUILTY

THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SAYS 25 YEAR OLD MICHAEL ELVEY THE SECOND OF ALTOONA HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO COUNTERFEITING. HE MADE ABOUT 5-THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF FUNNY MONEY BETWEEN DECEMBER 2010 AND FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR. ELVEY FACES A MAXIMUM OF 20 YEARS WHEN HE’S SENTENCED NOVEMBER 13TH IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT.

MILK SPILL

A TANKER TRUCK SPILLED A FULL LOAD OF MILK MONDAY MORNING WHEN IT CRASHED ON THE ON-RAMP TO ROUTE 219 OUTSIDE OF JOHNSTOWN. THE DRIVER, 18 YEAR OLD RYAN CROYLE, HAD TO BE CUT OUT THE CAB AND WAS RUSHED TO MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER. CREWS SPENT MOST OF THE DAY CLEANING UP THE MESS.

ALTOONA STREET RE-OPENING

A SECTION OF 31ST STREET IN ALTOONA HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN SINCE MAY WHEN THE FORMER RUSSO BUILDING WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED BY A SUSPECTED ARSON FIRE. OFFICIALS SAY PARTIAL DEMOLITION OF ONE WALL WAS COMPLETED YESTERDAY AND AS SOON AS THE BRICKS ARE CLEARED FROM THE STREET, THAT AREA WILL RE-OPEN TO TRAFFIC SOMETIME LATER TODAY.

BLAIR COUNTY BUSINESS HALL OF FAME

THE BLAIR COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WILL INDUCT 5 BUSINESSES INTO THE BUSINESS HALL OF FAME OCTOBER 15TH AT THE BLAIR COUNTY CONVENTION CENTER. THEY INCLUDE: ALPHA, FORMERLY KNOWN AS COOKSON ELECTRONICS…CHILD ADVOCATES OF BLAIR COUNTY…HEALTHSOUTH REHABILIATION HOSPITAL OF ALTOONA…AND HOSS’S STEAK AND SEA HOUSE. THE ALTOONA TRIBUNE WILL BE HONORED IN THE HERITAGE CATEGORY. FORVER BROADCASTING WILL RECEIVE A COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD.
