DOUBLE MURDER TRIAL BEGINS

6 WITNESSES TESTIFIED AS THE DOUBLE MURDER TRIAL OF NICHOLAS HORNER OF ALTOONA BEGAN MONDAY. THE IRAQ WAR VETERAN CLAIMS HE SUFFERED FROM POST TRAUMATIC STRESS WHEN HE KILLED 2 MEN IN APRIL 2009. THE PROSECUTION’S FIRST 4 WITNESSES WORK AT HOLIDAY BOWL WHERE HORNER DRANK BEER PRIOR TO THE MURDERS, BUT THEY SAID HE DID NOT APPEAR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. PROSECUTORS SAY HORNER WALKED TO THE 58TH STREET SUBWAY, KILLED SCOTT GARLICK AND WOUNDED A FEMALE EMPLOYEE. THE 5TH WITNESS TOLD THE JURY HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE FOLLOWED BY SCREAMING…THEN HORNER WALKED TO THE COUNTER, POINTED A GUN AT THE CASHIER AND DEMANDED MONEY. THE CASHIER TESTIFIED THAT IT HAPPENED THE SAME WAY. PROSECUTORS SAY HORNER THEN WALKED DOWN THE STREET AND SHOT RAYMOND WILLIAMS NEARBY. TESTIMONY WILL PICK UP AGAIN THIS MORNING.

INMATE TRIED TO HIRE A HITMAN

CLEARFIELD COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY WILLIAM SHAW SAYS SOLICITATION TO COMMIT MURDER CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST 36 YEAR OLD JERRY LEE RITCHEY JUNIOR OF STRATTANVILLE, CLARION COUNTY. RITCHEY IS ACCUSED OF TRYING TO HIRE ANOTHER CLEARFIELD COUNTY PRISON INMATE TO KILL RITCHEY'S EX-WIFE AND HER BOYFRIEND…THEN EITHER BURN RITCHEY'S CURRENT WIFE WITH ACID OR CUT HER FACE WITH A KNIFE. AUTHORITIES HAVE RITCHEY ON TAPE MAKING THE OFFER AND PROVIDING THE INFORMANT WITH ADDRESSES AND FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. RITCHEY’S PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY.

SANDUSKY COURT DATE POSTPONED

ACCORDING TO JERRY SANDUSKY’S ATTORNEY, THE PRE-TRIAL CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY IS EXPECTED TO BE PUSHED BACK. JOE AMENDOLA SAYS IT WAS CANCELLED DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY AND NATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE CASE.

PENN STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION

PENN STATE HAS RELEASED THE POSITION STATEMENTS AND BIOGRAPHIES FOR THE 86 ALUMNI VYING FOR 3 SEATS ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. ALL MEMBERS OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL RECEIVE A BALLOT ON-LINE. OTHER ALUMNI CAN REQUEST A BALLOT BY EMAILING THE UNIVERSITY. THE WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED MAY 4TH AND NEW BOARD MEMBERS WILL START 3 YEAR TERMS ON JULY 1ST.

STATE COLLEGE BORO COUNCIL MEMBERS AND COLLEGE TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER ON THE PROPOSAL. NEW BLEACHERS AT THE ALTOONA FIELDHOUS

THE ALTOONA SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS AGREED TO SPEND OVER 321-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO INSTALL NEW BLEACHERS AT THE FIELDHOUSE. THE DISTRICT’S INSURANCE COMPANY SAYS THE CURRENT BLEACHERS ARE 40 YEARS OLD AND THERE IS ALSO A WALL THAT COULD POTENTIALLY FALL OVER. CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
