SOME TENSE MOMENTS YESTERDAY MORNING AT ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL WHEN A FATHER CALLED THE POLICE AND SAID HIS GUN AND AMMUNITION WERE MISSING. COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIRECTOR PAULA FOREMAN SAYS ENTRY WAS RESTRICTED TO ONE LOCATION AND OFFICIALS USED METAL DETECTORS TO CHECK EVERYONE WHO ENTERED THE BUILDING. THE 18 YEAR OLD STUDENT WHO HAD ACCESS TO THE GUN DID REPORT TO SCHOOL, BUT NO WEAPONS WERE FOUND. HE HAD REPORTEDLY ARGUED WITH HIS PARENTS OVER THE WEEKEND AND LEFT THE HOUSE WITH A BACKPACK FULL OF ITEMS. THE GUN HAS STILL NOT BEEN LOCATED.

ONE DEAD/3 INJURED

A FATAL CRASH ABOUT 9:15 LAST NIGHT ALONG ROUTE 53 IN DECATUR TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY 25 YEAR OLD JOSHUA KLINE OF PHILIPSBURG WAS KILLED WHEN HIS VEHICLE REAR-ENDED ANOTHER CAR AND THEN STRUCK A TREE. KLINE’S PASSENGERS, 22 YEAR OLD CODY GOLDING OF MUNSON AND 23 YEAR OLD JOHN PHELAN OF PHILIPSBURG, WERE TAKEN TO UPMC ALTOONA ALONG WITH THE DRIVER OF THE SECOND VEHICLE, 23 YEAR OLD WESLEY MCMASTERS OF PATTON. NO WORD ON THEIR CONDITIONS.

VEHICULAR HOMICIDE TRIAL UNDERWAY

30 YEAR OLD MATTHEW SHIRK OF BELLEFONTE IS ON TRIAL IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT. POLICE SAY HE WAS DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE IN DECEMBER OF 2011 WHEN HIS PICKUP CRASHED NEAR SNOWSHOE, KILLING HIS FRIEND, 24 YEAR OLD KELLY RIDER, AND INJURING HIMSELF AND 2 OTHERS. SHIRK WAS DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE AND THE TRUCK WAS UNINSURED. TESTIMONY RESUMES THIS MORNING.

HIT & RUN DRIVER CONFESSES

STATE POLICE IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN CONNECTION WITH A HIT AND RUN CRASH LAST THURSDAY NIGHT IN KNOX TOWNSHIP. 32 YEAR OLD TERRY CROWNOVER OF MADERA IS CHARGED WITH LEAVING THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT THAT SERIOUSLY INJURED A COUPLE FROM NEW MILLPORT. THEY WERE BOTH FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA AFTER CROWNOVER ALLEGEDLY LEFT THEM IN THE WRECKAGE OF THEIR BURNING VEHICLE. CROWNOVER’S WIFE CALLED POLICE TO REPORT THEIR VEHICLE WAS STOLEN, BUT THE COUPLE LATER ADMITTED THAT HE WAS THE ONE INVOLVED.

YOUNG WOMAN KILLED

MORE DETAILS IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF 20 YEAR OLD LINSEY WOLFE OF JOHNSTOWN. POLICE SAY SHE ARGUED WITH HER BOYFRIEND, 25 YEAR OLD KYLE RODGERS, SATURDAY NIGHT AT THEIR HOME ON BLOOM STREET IN DALE BORO. RODGERS ALLEGEDLY WENT TO THE BEDROOM, GOT HIS GUN AND WENT DOWN THE STAIRS. HE TOLD POLICE WOLFE PUSHED HIM, AND THE GUN WENT OFF HITTING HER. WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, WOLFE’S MOTHER WAS PERFORMING C-P-R AND RODGERS SAID HE WAS SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED. RODGERS IS IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JAIL, CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE.

DRUG KINGPIN’S SENTENCING DELAYED

IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT, SENTENCING WAS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR CONVICTED DRUG KINGPIN GEORGE LOWMASTER OF CARROLLTOWN…BUT IT’S BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 23RD. HIS MOTHER, DOLLY, PLEADED GUILTY TO MARIJUANA POSSESSION AND DISTRIBUTION CONSPIRACY AND WAS PREVIOUSLY SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS PROBATION, INCLUDING A YEAR ON HOUSE ARREST. HER HUSBAND, GERALD, PLEADED TO MONEY LAUNDERING-RELATED CHARGES AND RECEIVED 46 MONTHS BEHIND BARS. DOZENS OF OTHER MEMBERS OF THE OPERATION WERE ALSO ARRESTED. GEORGE LOWMASTER COULD GET UP TO 20 YEARS.

JOHNSTOWN HAS A PROBLEM

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL KATHLEEN KANE TELLS WJAC THERE IS A HEROIN EPIDEMIC IN JOHNSTOWN BECAUSE THE CITY IS ACCESSIBLE OFF THE HIGHWAYS. IT’S THE RIGHT SIZE…AND DRUG DEALERS KNOW THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS UNDERSTAFFED. SHE SAYS THAT'S WHY THERE'S BEEN A SUDDEN SPIKE IN CRIME IN JOHNSTOWN OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. LAST YEAR, THERE WERE 7 HOMICIDES ATTRIBUTED TO DRUGS. NARCOTICS AGENTS ARE NOW FOCUSING ON JOHNSTOWN…EXECUTING MORE SEARCH WARRANTS, STOPPING MORE CARS, AND MORE HEAVILY PATROLLING THE STREETS.

VANDALISM IN ST COLLEGE AREA

FERGUSON TOWNSHIP POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SERIES OF VANDALISM INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED OVERNIGHT FRIDAY IN THE OVERLOOK HEIGHTS AREA OF STATE COLLEGE. 11 VEHICLES PARKED ON NORTH ATHERTON, VILLAGE DRIVE, EAST NORTH HILLS PLACE, AND THE 1300 AND 1400 BLOCKS OF CURTIN STREET WERE EITHER ENTERED OR DAMAGED. SOME GLOVE BOXES WERE RANSACKED AND A SWISS ARMY TYPE KNIFE WAS TAKEN FROM ONE. TIRES WERE SLASHED TIRES ON 6 DIFFERENT VEHICLES…ONE WAS SCRATCHED ALONG ONE SIDE…SEAT CUSHIONS WERE CUT IN ANOTHER…AND A FIRE EXTINGUISHER WAS DISCHARGED IN A DRIVEWAY.
