SANTORUM BOWS OUT

THE PENNSYLVANIA PRIMARY IS NOW LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AWAY AND YESTERDAY RICK SANTORUM SUSPENDED HIS CAMPAIGN. SANTORUM APPEARED WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN IN GETTYSBURG TELLING SUPPORTERS THE RACE FOR HIM WAS OVER, BUT THE FIGHT TO DEFEAT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA COULD GO ON. SANTORUM HAD BEEN HOPING TO HOLD OUT THRU THE PENNSYLVANIA PRIMARY, BUT DECIDED TO FOLD UP AFTER HIS 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, BELLA, SPENT ANOTHER WEEKEND IN THE HOSPITAL. MITT ROMNEY, WHO WILL BE THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, RELEASED A STATEMENT YESTERDAY SAYING – QUOTE – “SENATOR SANTORUM IS AN ABLE AND WORTHY COMPETITOR, AND I CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE CAMPAIGN HE RAN. HE HAS PROVEN HIMSELF TO BE AN IMPORTANT VOICE IN OUR PARTY AND IN THE NATION. WE BOTH RECOGNIZE THAT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IS PUTTING THE FAILURES OF THE LAST 3 YEARS BEHIND US AND SETTING AMERICA BACK ON THE PATH TO PROSPERITY.”

STAND-OFF ENDS WITH GUNSHOT

A 33 YEAR OLD MAN SHOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD YESTERDAY FOLLOWING A BRIEF POLICE STANDOFF AT THE BEDFORD AREA WAL-MART. HE WAS FLOWN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM AND THERE IS NO WORD ON HIS CONDITION. POLICE SAY IT STARTED WHEN A SHERIFF’S DEPUTY TRIED TO APPROACH A MAN WHO HAD AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT. THE SUSPECT POINTED A HANDGUN AT THE OFFICER AND THEN TURNED THE WEAPON ON HIMSELF. 

MURDER-FOR-HIRE TRIAL UNDERWAY

CALVIN MALLORY’S MURDER-FOR-HIRE TRIAL CONTINUED YESTERDAY IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT WITH 26 YEAR OLD RONALD ZIEGEL OF FRIEDENS TESTIFING THAT HE WAS PART OF A MULTI-STATE DRUG PIPELINE THAT BROUGHT MARIJUANA, HEROIN AND COCAINE INTO THE COUNTY. MALLORY, OF BROOKLYN NEW YORK, IS ACCUSED OF HIRING 3 MEN TO KILL FELLOW DRUG DEALER BRYANT ADDERLEY OF BAKERSVILLE IN 2009. THE CASE WILL RESUME THIS MORNING.

FIRES EARLY THIS MORNING IN CAMBRIA AND SOMERSET COUNTIES

ABOUT 1AM, FLAMES BROKE OUT AT AN EMPTY HOUSE THAT WAS BEING REMODELED ON POPISH ROAD IN PORTAGE TOWNSHIP. AUTHORITIES SAY THE HOUSE IS A TOTAL LOSS. THEN AT 3AM, A FIRE STARTED AT A HOUSE ALONG REAR GRAHAM AVENUE IN WINDBER. THE SECOND FLOOR WAS GUTTED AND THE FAMILY GOT OUT OK. STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHALS WILL INVESTIGATE.

ARSON SUSPECTS JAILED

30 YEAR OLD DEANNA NEVEL OF WINBURNE AND 20 YEAR OLD HILMER HARRIS OF PHILIPSBURG ARE IN THE CLEARFIELD COUNTY PRISON ON 1-MILLION DOLLARS BAIL EACH, CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER BY ARSON. DISTRICT ATTORNEY WILLIAM SHAW SAYS THEY STARTED A FIRE IN NOVEMBER 2010 AT A MOBILE HOME AT THE BANEY TRAILER PARK IN DECATUR TOWNSHIP. PHYLLIS WITHERITE, MICHAEL MAINES, AND JAMES NEVEL WERE ALL INSIDE AT THE TIME AND ESCAPED UNHARMED. THERE WAS A SECOND FIRE AT A BOGGS TOWNSHIP RESIDENCE OWNED BY WILLIAM NEVEL, JAMES NEVEL’S FATHER. NO ONE WAS INSIDE THAT TIME. STATE POLICE SAY DEANNA NEVEL, HILMER HARRIS, AND ANOTHER PERSON WANTED TO KILL JAMES NEVEL BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING TO GET CUSTODY OF HIS CHILDREN WITH DEANNA NEVEL.
PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SET FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY.

STABBING SUSPECT TO BE IN COURT

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 44 YEAR OLD JUAN RIVERA WHO IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON, CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER. POLICE SAY RIVERA USED A 12-INCH BUTCHER KNIFE TO STAB ROBERT MEEK IN THE BACK LAST WEEK AT HIS LEXINGTON AVENUE APARTMENT. MEEK WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER IN CRITICAL CONDITION. BACK IN JANUARY, RIVERA WAS STABBED IN THE SHOULDER BY ANOTHER MAN AT THE SAME APARTMENT. JASON TABIB IS SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL APRIL 30TH. TABIB CLAIMS HE ACTED IN SELF-DEFENSE.

FORMER SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR PLEADS GUILTY

IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT THIS WEEK, FORMER MEYERSDALE HIGH SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR JOSHUA COVERT PLEADED GUILTY TO HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH A 16-YEAR OLD FEMALE STUDENT. THE 38-YEAR OLD RESIGNED SHORTLY AFTER BEING CHARGED. COVERT FACES UP TO 15-YEARS IN JAIL AND HE’LL BE SENTENCED JULY 12TH.

PATERNOVILLE SIGN THIEF DUE IN COURT

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT FOR 22 YEAR OLD CHARLES CIRAOLO OF FAIRPORT NEW YORK. PENN STATE POLICE SAY THEY HAVE VIDEO OF CIRAOLO DAMAGING PROPERY AND STEALING THE PATERNOVILLE SIGN FROM BEAVER STADIUM IN FEBRUARY. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT 23-THOUSAND DOLLARS. HE IS FREE ON 15-THOUSAND DOLLARS UNSECURED BAIL.

POT IN PENN STATE APARTMENT

FORMER PENN STATE DEFENSIVE END JACK CRAWFORD IS APPARENTLY OFF THE HOOK. UNIVERSITY POLICE RAIDED AN APARTMENT ON EAST POLLOCK ROAD IN MARCH AND FOUND MARIJUANA AND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. THEY REPORTED THAT CRAWFORD LIVED THERE ALONG WITH CURRENT PLAYER DEVON SMITH. NOW POLICE SAY CRAWFORD WAS NOT LIVING THERE AT THE TIME. NEITHER MAN HAS BEEN CHARGED SO FAR AND COACH BILL O’BRIEN SAYS HE IS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM INVESTIGATORS ABOUT SMITH.
