SANDUSKY SCANDAL

SUNDAY MORNING, CREWS REMOVED THE JOE PATERNO STATUE FROM OUTSIDE BEAVER STADIUM, AND YESTERDAY THE WALL THAT STOOD BEHIND IT WAS REDUCED TO RUBBLE. UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS SAY NO DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE ON WHERE THE STATUE WILL ULTIMATELY END UP. MEANWHILE, A PENN STATE SPOKESMAN SAID YESTERDAY THAT THE NCAA’S 60-MILLION DOLLAR FINE WILL BE PAID IN 12-MILLION DOLLAR INCREMENTS EACH YEAR FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS. THE UNIVERSITY WILL USE ITS ATHLETICS RESERVE FUND AND CAPITAL MAINTENANCE BUDGET IF NECESSARY AND NO TAX DOLLARS WILL BE USED TO PAY THE FINE.

PENN STATE POLICE CHIEF TYRONE PARHAM SAYS NUMEROUS EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN RECEIVING HARASSING MESSAGES ABOUT RECENT EVENTS, INCLUDING THE REMOVAL OF THE JOE PATERNO STATUE. MOST OF THE CALLS AND EMAILS ARE NON-THREATENING, BUT A FEW HAVE GONE A LITTLE FARTHER. NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED YET, AND THE MESSAGES APPEAR TO BE FROM DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

MAINTENANCE CREWS AT SPRING CREEK CEMETERY ARE REPORTING DAMAGE TO THE LANDSCAPE AROUND THE GRAVESITE OF JOE PATERNO. VISITORS HAVE BEEN HITTING OTHER TOMBSTONES… RUNNING THEM OVER…AND LEAVING TIRE TRACKS ALL OVER THE CEMETERY. THE CEMETERY HAS SPENT ABOUT 5-THOUSAND DOLLARS ON UPKEEP AND MEASURES TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING…AND OFFICIALS ARE ASKING VISITORS TO BE RESPECTFUL.

SOME PENN STATE SPONSORS ARE GETTING COLD FEET ABOUT THE UPCOMING FOOTBALL SEASON. STATE FARM IS THE FIRST TO SAY IT WILL NOT BE A SPONSOR OF HOME GAMES THIS YEAR AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS REMOVING ITS SIGNAGE FROM INSIDE BEAVER STADIUM. STATE FARM ALSO INSURES JERRY SANDUSKY’S HOME AND FILED A LAWSUIT LAST WEEK SAYING HIS HOMEOWNER'S POLICY SHOULDN’T BE USED TO COVER CIVIL SUITS FILED BY HIS VICTIMS. STATE FARM STILL PLANS TO SPONSOR NITTANY LION BASKETBALL. MEANWHILE, GENERAL MOTORS IS RECONSIDERING ITS SPONSORSHIP DEAL AND WALL STREET IS THREATENING TO DOWNGRADE PENN STATE’S CREDIT RATING, SUGGESTING THE PRICE OF THE SCANDAL COULD GO WELL BEYOND THE 60 MILLION DOLLAR FINE AND OTHER PENALTIES IMPOSED BY THE NCAA. PEPSI, PNC BANK, AND HIGHMARK HAVE DECIDED TO STICK TO THEIR DEALS.

FOLLOWING THE NCAA SANCTIONS AGAINST PENN STATE, QUARTERBACK MATT MCGLOIN RELEASED A STATEMENT ON HIS TWITTER PAGE YESTERDAY SAYING – QUOTE -- “TOUGH TIMES DON’T LAST, TOUGH PEOPLE DO. THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN THROUGH SOME HARD TIMES. I AND MANY OTHERS HAVE STAYED HERE OUT OF LOVE FOR THIS UNIVERSITY, ITS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, TEAMMATES, OUR WONDERFUL FANS AND TREMENDOUS STUDENT BODY. WE, AS STUDENT-ATHLETES, ARE BEING PUNISHED FOR GOING TO CLASS, GRADUATING, BEING INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY AND PLAYING FOOTBALL. EVEN THOUGH THESE PENALTIES ARE EXTREMELY HARSH, I AM A NITTANY LION AND WILL REMAIN ONE. I ENCOURAGE ALL PLAYERS, RECRUITS, AND SUPPORTERS TO STAY COMMITTED TO THE GREATEST FOOTBALL PROGRAM IN AMERICA.”

PENN STATE SAID LAST WEEK THAT 94 PERCENT OF 2011 SEASON TICKET HOLDERS HAD RENEWED THEIR SEATS FOR THE 2012 SEASON…AND OFFICIALS WILL NOT OFFER REFUNDS NOW THAT THE NCAA HAS ANNOUNCED MAJOR SANCTIONS INCLUDING THE LOSS OF POST-SEASON PLAY FOR 4 YEARS. PENN STATE HAS ALSO SOLD MORE THAN 34-HUNDRED NEW SEASON TICKETS. HOME OPPONENTS WILL INCLUDE OHIO UNIVERSITY, NAVY, TEMPLE, NORTHWESTERN, OHIO STATE, INDIANA AND WISCONSIN.

PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH BILL O’BRIEN IS TRYING TO KEEP HIS 2012 ROSTER TOGETHER.HE  TOLD ESPN’S DAN PATRICK SHOW YESTERDAY THAT THE TRANSFER WAIVER WILL BE ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT NCAA SANCTIONS TO COPE WITH. IT ALLOWS PLAYERS TO TRANSFER TO ANOTHER DIVISION I SCHOOL WITHOUT SITTING OUT A SEASON. O'BRIEN DECLINED TO DISCUSS WHETHER JUNIOR RUNNING BACK SILAS REDD OR ANY OTHER PLAYERS ARE PLANNING TO TRANSFER, BUT HE SAID NO MEMBERS OF HIS COACHING STAFF ARE LEAVING.

THE PENN STATE CREAMERY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT MONEY RAISED THROUGH THE SALE OF  PEACHY PATERNO ICE CREAM FOR THE NEXT YEAR WILL GO TO AN ORGANIZATION THAT WORKS WITH THE ISSUE OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, BUT THE RECIPIENT HASN’T YET BEEN NAMED. THE CREAMERY HAS SOLD THAT FLAVOR SINCE AN ICE-CREAM NAMING CONTEST RUN BY THE FOOD SCIENCE CLUB IN 1987 AND IT WILL STAY ON THE MENU. MEANWHILE, PENN STATE NO LONGER LISTS JOEGIES AS AN EATERY OPTION AT THE HUB ON ITS DINING WEBSITE. THEY HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY “HUB SUBS.”
