LIFE OR DEATH?

A BLAIR COUNTY JURY DELIBERATED FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS YESTERDAY BEFORE FINDING IRAQ WAR VETERAN NICHOLAS HORNER OF ALTOONA GUILTY OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN THE APRIL 2009 SHOOTING DEATHS OF SCOTT GARLICK AND RAY WILLIAMS. THE JURY ALSO CONVICTED HORNER OF 9 OTHER CHARGES INCLUDING AGGRAVATED ASSAULT FOR SHOOTING MICHELLE PETTY IN THE HIP INSIDE THE 58TH STREET SUBWAY RESTAURANT. DEFENSE ATTORNEY TOM DICKEY ASKED THE JURY TO FIND HORNER GUILTY OF 3RD DEGREE MURDER, CLAIMING HE WAS IN A DREAM-LIKE STATE DURING THE SHOOTINGS.  THE DEATH PENALTY PHASE OF HORNER’S TRIAL STARTS AT 10 THIS MORNING.

D-A WON’T SEEK DEATH PENALTY

CAMBRIA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY KELLY CALLIHAN HAS DECIDED NOT TO SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST 29 YEAR OLD ANTHONY HARVEY OF PHILADELPHIA WHO IS CHARGED AS AN ACCOMPLICE IN THE OCTOBER SHOOTING DEATH OF J-QUAN LEWIS OUTSIDE THE OAKHURT HOMES IN JOHNSTOWN.
YESTERDAY, HARVEY PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO ALL CHARGES. CALLIHAN HAS NOT YET MADE UP HER MIND ABOUT THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THE ALLEGED SHOOTER, 30 YEAR OLD MARQUIS NEAL, WHO IS CURRENTLY FIGHTING EXTRADITION FROM NEW JERSEY.

CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

THE CAMBRIA COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE HAS IDENTIFIED THE MAN WHO DIED IN A CRASH IN READE TOWNSHIP MONDAY NIGHT. 60 YEAR OLD PATRICK CAVANAUGH FROM THE FLINTON AREA DIED FROM MULTIPLE BLUNT FORCE INJURIES AFTER HIS VAN HIT A TREE HEAD-ON ALONG ROSELAND ROAD.
CAVANAUGH WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AND WAS EJECTED WHEN THE VAN FLIPPED OVER. OFFICIALS SAY TOXICOLOGY TESTS ARE PENDING BUT THEY DON’T SUSPECT DRUNK DRIVING.

ARMED ROBBERY IN ST. COLLEGE

AN ARMED ROBBERY EARLY TUESDAY MORNING IN A PARKING LOT ON VAIRO BOULEVARD IN STATE COLLEGE. PATTON TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY A BLACK MAN WITH A GUN ROBBED ANOTHER MAN THEN FLED IN A LIGHT GRAY SEDAN. A SECOND PERSON, POSSIBLY A WOMAN, WAS ALSO IN THE CAR. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL POLICE AT 800-479-0050.

TEEN CLAIMS SHE WAS KIDNAPPED

A JOHNSTOWN TEENAGER CLAIMS SHE WAS KIDNAPPED…TAKEN TO ALLENTOWN…AND FORCED INTO PROSTITUTION. THE TEEN WAS WALKING ON A STREET IN ALLENTOWN OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN SHE FLAGGED DOWN POLICE FOR HELP. SHE TOLD POLICE JUSTIN THOMAS TOOK HER FROM HER HOME AND THREATENED TO KILL HER IF SHE TRIED TO RUN AWAY. THOMAS WILL HAVE A COURT HEARING NEXT WEEK.

STUDENTS MAKING FUNNY MONEY

STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY FELONY FORGERY CHARGES ARE PENDING AGAINST 2 PENN STATE STUDENTS WHO DESIGNED COUNTERFEIT 1 AND 5-DOLLAR BILLS ON THEIR COMPUTERS AND PASSED THEM OFF AS REAL CURRENCY. THE STUDENTS’ NAMES HAVEN’T BEEN RELEASED YET. EMPLOYEES AT THE DOWNTOWN STATE COLLEGE MCDONALD’S REPORTED TO POLICE THAT COUNTERFEIT MONEY WAS USED THIS PAST WEEKEND.

HOSPITAL CLOSING THIS AFTERNOON

TODAY IS THE DAY ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM CLOSES DOWN THE 7TH AVENUE CAMPUS. AFTER 3 YEARS, OFFICIALS SAY THE CONSOLIDATION OF ACUTE CARE HAS BEEN COMPLETED AT THE ALTOONA HOSPITAL CAMPUS ON HOWARD AVENUE. THE FORMER BON SECOUR CAMPUS WILL END OPERATIONS AT 3PM, AT THE END OF THE FIRST SHIFT. AFTER 3PM, ANYONE NEEDING EMERGENCY CARE AND ALL ADMISSIONS SHOULD REPORT TO HOWARD AVENUE.

A 7-POINT-5 MILE DETOUR BEGINS TODAY ALONG NORTH PLEASANT VALLEY BOULEVARD NEAR DELGROSSOS AMUSEMENT PARK IN TIPTON. THE CONTRACTOR IS REPLACING A BRIDGE OVER THE LITTLE JUNIATA RIVER. THE PROJECT HAS A COMPLETION DATE OF JUNE 2013.
